Weird CD/CD-RW problems

Post by Shaidar Haran »

I've recently been trying to transfer some files on CD-RW discs (various file types) and I've been getting the error message " [File name] cannot be read from specified device". Does any one know why I should be getting that and anything I can do to fix it?

Possibly, but the problem doesn't seem to be confined to any one specific drive. I've got two on that computer and neither works.

try using it on another computer. assuming it's not the computer itself, the CD disc may be scratched or otherwise damaged in a way that's keeping it from reading properly.

They're new discs and unscratched. And the problems seem to be that computer. Possibly a virus.

What I probably need to do is reformat the drive, but Gateway never sent me the Win98 Cds. So I can't really do that.

Hypothetacally, there may or may not be copies of windoze floating around the net. And since j00 own a copy already i believe that it would be legal to dl it. Damn. To use it j00'd need to burn it. And to burn it j00'd need it. Catch 22 i geuss.

Thanks. I don't need to worry about that, just getting the drive working.

David, no. He does not have a license for the versions of Windows floating around the 'net. And since the problem has been resolved...
