What is your favorite OS

oh yeah and no Sci-fi programming OSes....

If there were more options for UNIX/Linux/BSD systems, then I'd choose those...

But at the moment I'm forced to stick with Windows. Too much to lose if I just vanilla switch.

Oh and an off-topic question: What's CPM?

Joo could use suse. If you have any space left on the hdd then the auto partioner can partion it w/o loosing windoze data.

There is two options for unix or linux

I just can't allow us to have vote for combos.

after all it's just not possible under the format here.

after all I'm a unix/DRDos fan myself....

BTW did anyone catch it's not what you are currently USING it's what OS you LIKED the best. severall options are for OSes that don't exist anymore.

My vote btw is going for easy to use, basic compatible, drop it off a cliff it will work fine indestructable DOS ver 3.3. frin the days when keyboards could take coffee spills. (glares at keyborad for shorting out on camomile tea (and it wasn't even plugged in)) There's a reason the early eighties and early ninties were called the golden years of bullet proof DOS (face it we didn't see OS/MS DOS 5 until 92, and most things still could run on Dos 3!

CPM was designed by Gary Killdal and was basically DOS with the drive letters switched around (A: was your hard drive instead of C: ). IBM ALMOST picked it up for their Personal Computer, but picked Microsoft's DOS instead after Killdal's wife refused to sign an NDA and threw them out of the house.

Yes, and DR Dos is also known as CPM's revenge because it's version 6 came out at the same time that MS Dos 6 did, had decent compression and memory management algorythums (they actually worked very well and weren't fatal bugged like the MS Dos versions), and built in multi OS on start up compatablity, and very secure passward protections.

Linux. If the piracy capital of the world (China) likes it over an OS they get for "free" (Windows), it has to be good.

Simply from what I have used, I like Win2K. Or maybe OS X. I dunno. I'm more familiar with Winblows, though.

I'd have to stick with Windows XP. Reasons are simple: it's the best OS that was installed on my computer. I had some troubles with Linux because of my antique sound card. Plus I like games a lot and for the moment Linux can't offer me a good alternative.

it's what you have had the most constructive use of!/liked the most!

Sorry, I've used almost all the OS'es you have listed, but I still prefer the modern ones. I mean, how could anyone WANT to go back to a command line exclusive interface?

Seconded. Linux/Unix type OS's are extremly powerfull and flexible, compared to Microsoft ones. But a command line OS is oriented mostly towards power users and passionate people. Not quite like myself.

XP Pro. Very stable, only had about 2 crashes since it came out

Windows. But I'd dump it for Linux in a heartbeat.

I run Linux on my other machine. Its not of much use unless you're doing something like running a server.

I rather miss DOS, There was something infinitely gratifying about not having a GUI. Made you look and FEEL smart to know and use some of the more obscure DOS commands. Impress your friends...make them think you are a computer GOD... There was a time when I would actually use DOS instead of Windows. remember back in the day when you had to launch windows FROM DOS Manually? Yeah, just like that. I miss DOS. I forgot many commands, but i'd get it back, I'm sure.

I remember before win 95 I had my DRDOs 7, with 4 different loading configurations, lots of ram drives for acclerating games, a Windows 3.3 friendly mode, a work mode, and a BBS/internet mode.

I had that running so finely tuned, and so stable that I really do miss it.

What? No OS/2?

Sure, I haven't used it in years, but it was my primary OS for years before that, and it'll always have a special place in my heart.

Well, Mandrake 9.2 and 10.0 are able to reliably resize Windows partitions, NTFS included (as far as my own tests have proved -- make a backup anyway just to be sure) and their installers are pretty simple. They also have support for most all desktop PC hardware right out of the box.

Linux has kind of finally come of age as a desktop OS. If you're a real power user, though, you still need a bit of learning.

Even up to W98SE, you could tweak msdos.sys to not load Windows and make it so you could load it manually using win.com.
