Well I keep getting this message when I start that my hard drive is going to explode...someday. It's a Western Digital that's about a year and a half old and was purportedly trashed because Winblows would crash too much and I'd shut it off manually (sez dad).

What brand of hard drive will last a while?

I have not seen any numbers that indicate that any particular major brand is currently more reliable than another.

The only really reliable drives are probably WD's Raptor series and expensive 10K and 15K SCSI drives.
