Fucking blurry monitor display

Okay, I have a Compaq S900 19" monitor. Almost two years ago while playing Half-Life, the screen went garbled, distorted and funky for about 10 seconds. I'm talking out of the blue, no discernable external factors. Ever since then, the display has been incredibly blurry and fuzzy, especially with the monitors built-in contrast turned up to an appreciable amount. Pure colors like red, blue, and white will "bleed" over nearby pixels and make text nearly unreadable at high contrast settings.

~This is not a driver problem
~This is not a video card problem, as I have been through 3 Nvidia cards in about 2 years - Riva Ultra TNT2, GeForce2, and GeForce4MX440
~Magnets are not responsible, as there were no magnetic devices near the monitor when it fucked up
~Color temperature makes no difference, it will still fuzz when settings are high

Any ideas in the city?

could be something to do with the wiring perhaps? sounds like an internal problem, in which case you might be fucked and better off buying a new monitor.

Sounds like the monitor's insides went tits-up.

Have you tried opening the back of the monitor and adjusting the pots at the back of the tube? (Do this with the monitor ON with another person watching the screen while you do this.)

A similar problem happened to my old Compaq V55 monitor while playing Quake 3 Arena. The problem did went away later though.

Definitely open it up. My Samsung SyncMaster 955DF started getting blurry a few months ago, and I just suffered with it for months before suddenly remembering, right before I was going to send it off to their Utah service center, that most monitors will have a focus knob somewhere.

Open it up, find the focus (and maybe a couple more) knobs, and fiddle with them. Be fucking careful, though--the capacitors in monitors are dangerous as hell.

Or, it could just be that an electron gun or a focus magnet went wonky, which means the monitor's unrepairable (by you). :)

Getting that thing open would be a whore, and dangerous as hell. I'll consider it for now.

Just for reference, the pots will be on the back of the tube, usually on the right side (facing from the rear of the tube looking outward).

I have a MAG Innovision MX21F from 1995, and its pincushion control is totally fucked. Any ideas?
