Patching isn't required. Check the second link. Instructions to fix it yourself are there.

It's only good for bypassing kmixer, and that itself isn't worth it unless you have a damn good sound system/headphones and a 24 bit sound card.

XMMS and Winamp > all else

Some people like foobar2000's interface better.
