The Ankh-Morpork Watch in NWN

Post by Slartibartfast »

I've been converting a few of the Watch to NeverWinter Nights, so far I think with decent results. Anyone who knows a bit of D&D and/or GURPS Discworld is welcome to give me their two cents and stuff.

I read somewhere about converting GURPS scores to D&D ability scores, and it pretty much says "leave them as they are" so ST 14 = Str 14. Don't know if I should fudge this somehow, but well.

So far this is more or less what I've done:

Commander Vimes: level 9 fighter, stats (Str,Dex,Con,Int,Wis,Cha) = 11,12,12,14,14,10
Captain Carrot: level 7 fighter, stats = 19,16,16,13,10,14 (from charisma +4 advantage, maybe it's too low).
Sergeant Detritus: half-orc, level 4 barbarian, 1 fighter, stats = 23,12,13,9,10,10
Sergeant Colon: level 3 fighter, stats = 8,10,9,11,11,10
Corporal Nobbs: level 2 rogue, 1 fighter, stats = 8,12,8,10,10,10 (human but uses halfling model)
Constable Angua: race="shapechanger" (but looks human), level 3(should be 5?) fighter, stats = 11,13,13,13,10,10. I suppose shapechanging should be handled by script/plot.

I made some standard equipment for them, which includes a light xbow, a shortsword, and a AC8 "breastplate", kinda gold-colored (bronze?). exceptions are carrot (who has a vorpal? +5 longsword) and no bow, and has a slightly different looking armor (added the "protective" -immunity to knockdown?- and it's really shiny, cha+1, maybe should add a penalty to stealth), vimes who has a +1 xbow, shortsword and armor, colon has a shortbow instead of xbow, nobby has a ugly rusted armor (cha-1), a +1 xbow (hogswatch gift) and a club instead of sword (dunno why), and detritus has a club and a +5 mighty heavy crossbow (usable only by half-orcs, supposed to be an ex-"siege bow"), also changed the armor look a bit (also only usable by half-orcs)

These aren't PCs or henchmen, I just tried to make them faithful to the books even if the player is never going to see their "nonlootable" stuff, haha - maybe if they watch them fight some rabble of vampires or a dragon, I don't know.

I'll post a screenshot momentarily.

Shouldn't Detritus's bow be usable only by half-trolls, not half-orcs? Orcs aren't much stronger than humans...

D&D troll is a completely different thing than the DW troll. Plus there's no Player "troll" race, only a troll monster model that looks like some kind of big bony gnome made of moss. I'm just assuming that D&D half-orc = DW troll and fudging the values.

What about the hand crossbows? I'm pretty sure every member has one, and I'm sure there are hand crossbows in that Underdark expansion.

Don't own the Underdark expansion. In fact I've reinstalled NWN without SOU to make a mod that runs for most people. Also, I've only read as far as Feet of Clay (and I'm only about halfway) so I dunno about any hand xbows...

So far the only custom content I've used is some portraits I found in a fan site (pretty good too), maybe I'll add "custom races" if that's feasible, eventually (to make a better "troll" template from the half-orc race).

Shouldn't Vimes be a tad stronger then that?

Sure, he's able to lift three hundred pound Orangutans with one hand, but only when he's pissed off enough not to notice. :P

I'm using the GURPS attribute values... I guess he's never demonstrated any kind of special strength (except in a comical situation, like Impact noted) nor does he show big muscles or anything, he's actually a thin man.

He is quite good in unarmed combat though. And at setting traps, though I don't know if that'd come in here.

To tell the truth, I should just use default Fighter attributes, it's not like anyone's actually going to see his stats :P he's a NPC after all...

Besides, you're right, since there's no such thing as "fighting skill" in D&D, it all comes down to strength bonus and level. I mean, sure you have "focus" and "specialization" but that's peanuts compared to the +20 you end up adding your level to-hit and your str.

But anyway, what do you think about the new bow?

The new bow looks like a... piano.

It's basically supposed to be a ballista that was converted for hand use. Think a human ballista from Warcraft II. Chop off the wheels and most of the frame.

This is the in-game version of a ballista. It looks more like the Kidby drawings than the Warcraft ballista.

Ok, I see what you're getting at.

(It would actually be kind of funny in-game, having what looks like an upright piano aimed at you...)

It could do with some changes tho, maybe make the end less rectangular, so that it doesn't clip with the head, or sumthing. I'm thinking adding a long handle so that it's fired from the shoulder. This is more like an experiment to see if it can look right.

And for now I've used it all as a crossbow "body", and crossbows are made up from 3 parts (the body, the bow and some knob) so it could be more customizable :)

For now I'm defining it as "Troll only" (I already changed the race name) and mighty +10 or so. I'm thinking of adding "race" limitations to most armors.
