As if some techie at an ISP or Yahoo (violating TOS, but then again, fears of Gmail center around Google violating the TOS anyway) couldn't read your mail already.
- Email is inherently insecure. Geez, the FUD around this is ridiculous.

Ah, government: A glorious place where people get to make important decisions on things they really know nothing about...

A California state senator said Monday she was drafting legislation to block Google's free e-mail service "Gmail" because it would place advertising in personal messages after searching them for key words.
Here is stupid.

Given that when you sign up you will no doubt agree to it, then I see no reason to block it.

Oops, thread title should be legislator, not legislature.

wow. what an ignorant twat. Google isn't hiding the fact that they're putting these advertisements in your service. They certainly aren't learning any information from you. Exactly how is it a violation of privacy again? oh, wait. it isn't.
Especially since you're more than likely to agree to the terms of service when you sign up. If you don't want the ads, then that's what premium services are for. You're not paying for it so you don't really have any right to bitch about the terms when it's given to you as a choice.

Remember that now it is considered a violation of Privacy even to send mail to people. "Oh no he's saying stuff to me! Where's my Privacy OMG!". Like your cell phone company sending you a couple little messages each month to tell you about new promotions and stuff, yeah most people think that's against Privacy.
Every single free email service puts their little ads in every outgoing mail, automatically (nope I don't think it's a little imp that opens your letters and reads them and then glues some advertisement at the end)
Maybe someone should tell these people that when they send a mail a computer has to read them from the disk before it sends them via the network. They'd go bananas.

Gmail wrote:Advertisements. As consideration for using the Service, you agree and understand that Google will display ads and other information adjacent to and related to the content of your email. Gmail serves relevant ads using a completely automated process that enables Google to effectively target dynamically changing content, such as email. No human will read the content of your email in order to target such advertisements or other information without your consent, and no email content or other personally identifiable information will be provided to advertisers as part of the Service.
taken from Gmail's terms of service. Apparently the legislator read this and interpreted everything in reverse. note the pertinent bolded section.

Shit, even if they did that, I wouldn't care. Worth it for 1 free GB.
