seeing as I cant find a gm in the area I like, I am going to write my own campaign and then have a character of my design run through it. similar to writing a story and seeing what the stats would be.

I figure this is the best way to get to an interesting epic level pc, as the gms I know wont let the campaign top 10th level or be evil. alternatley, I wont feel it cheapened by getting 40 magic items for killing some kobolds, as the gm who lets me reach epic hands out.

any of you ever try something like this? any suggestions or observations?

I might have considered that once or twice, sounds like an interesting idea.

It's like writing a story with maybe a few random elements, I suppose. And you get to play with yourself.
