Media Players Needed

i've just downloaded a few .wmv files and unfortunately they don't seem to want to play in my windows media player (i'm using the version that comes with windows 98, which is my present OS).
Basically i'm wondering if anyone knows of any free players that play .wmv/.wma files without too much issue and can run on a computer with minimal resources available to it. (we're talking 300MhZ system here). If anyone has any suggestions available it would be appreciated.

Winamp 5 with the classic mode skin installed. Or, if you're insane, Windows Media Player 9, which would probably set that old overworked CPU on fire.

doesn't Winamp 5 require an insane amount of resources to use?

A bit more than 2, but orders of magnitude less than 3.

Juet get the standard old WinAmp. I believe version 3 is still available on the Winamp site.

MPlayer (for Linux) ^_~.
Plays anything I care to shove at it, although it's rough controlling it with the kbd when you only have one hand free (yes, I know, most vids are porn anyway!).
Is there a decent GUI for MPlayer?

Honestly, avoid 3 like the plague. Either stick to 2 or upgrade to 5, but don't get the worst of both worlds (and then some).
BTW, if you remember partial filenames,
WWW.FILEMIRRORS.COM is a great place to look (it's the history of all binaries ever downloaded by most users with Getright)

You will need to download the latest version of Windows Media to view the files.

No because they changed the WMV format slightly so that WMV files encoded with that new format will ONLY play in MP9. Even if you have MP9 installed, you can't use 6.4 to view them, only 9.

Just use Winamp 5. My friend got it run on a 100mhz 486 equipped ibm think pad laptop from '96.

Winamp 5. Use a classic skin, or better yet, set some global hotkeys so you can control winamp without any of the windows displayed.

Amazingly for someone who MS bashes so much, you still use Windows (same goes for much of the people on slashdot).

There is little reason to use mplayer on Windows considering that you can get its decoding engine anyways.
