ATX Power Supply Problem - Help wanted

can anyone here help me with this issue? i'm using a 500W 230V PSU with a athlon system, the PSU itself is only a few days old, replacing an old 430W one.

it was working well for the past few days but last night when i tried to turn the system on it powered up for all of 2 seconds then shut off totally, leaving only a series of low pitched beeps from the casing that stopped when i removed the plug from the wall outlet.

i checked the power connections and turned it on again, this time it worked normally, system booted fine, no problems for the rest of the night, powered down and up again at midnight, still no problems. so i left it be.

earlier when i powered up again it powered up for abt 2-3 seconds [barely enough time to get to POST] then the whole system powered down again [everything-fan, hard disks, etc.] leaving the beeps [much softer and not the same as the normal MB POST beeps]

unplugged, checked connetions, no burning plastic, no exploded capacitors on MB. tried to turn on again-nothing. no power at all. on fourth try the system powered up fully, went to windows, been running ever since.

+12, +5, +3.3 and Vcore voltage is all within normal range.

any idea what is wrong?

You PSU might be flaky, return it for a new one.
