My brother got a new FPS game called Far Cry, and it comes on
5 CDs...FIVE CDS!

Christ, this is NOT the days of FMV games like Wing Commander IV,
but a fucking 3d shooter with zero FMV......for fucks sake put the
god damn things on DVDs already.

You have the option of buying the CD or DVD version.

Shep, not everone has DVD-ROM drives on their computers (I have a CD-RW drive).

BTW, two games of mine, Starfleet Academy and Klingon Academy, both had 5 CDs each, but these were mostly for both game's prodigous amount of cutscenes (the games were installed entirely from the first and second disks). Starfleet Academy was released in 1997, FYI.

No, but everyone who's bought a branded PC in the last four or five years does. That probably easily accounts for well over 75% of all home PCs in the world (albeit not ones that will happily run Far Cry).

Anything mid-range or above these days will probably have a DVDRW of some kind as well, often dual format.

I actually never thought the time where PC games on CD get as silly as Monkey Island did on the Amiga with floppies would come so soon.

I'll certainly be taking note of future game sizes and opting for the DVD version if need be.

So? Not everyone had CD-ROM drives back in the day, but they made the leap and here we are now. DVD-ROM drives are very inexpensive, much more so than, say, a new video card. (And, they make CD-RW drives that can also read DVDs.)

Also, Klingon Academy (and SFA too, but I'm not sure and don't have it anymore) came on six CDs, and installation took place only off of the first CD.

Oh, and Valdemar, you want silliness? Windows 95 on floppy. My dad had that, and wound up using it repeatedly because the original Win95 boot disks did not include CD-ROM drivers and this was before the days of booting from the CD. (and so he wound up reinstalling Win95 off of floppy three or four times before he had the sense to make his own boot disk with CD-ROM drivers).

It is about time CD's are replaced with DVD's the way CD's replaced floppie disks back in the mid nineties.

I remember when a friend of mine called me a liar for insisting WC4 needed more than one CD.

"CD's are too big, no game can fill them!"

Are there any downsides to DVD's over CD's?

DVDs are more sensitive to damage due to the higher information density. So a scratch on a CD might trash a single file, but on a DVD it might trash much more.

But +5 cds generally get treated much much worse than 1 DVD

Not to mention that even if you don't have a DVD-ROM, they can be had for DIRT CHEAP. I got a 16x Samsung for $9 on clearance at Office Max a few months back. Runs like a fucking champ!

Anyone who has a computer that can run a game as massive and graphically intense Far Cry either has a DVD drive or can easily afford to go buy one.

I can believe that. Hell, I had a salvaged DVD drive (I gave it away) and I'm completely broke!

CD-RW / DVD combo drives are very affordable nowadays. They cost something like 40 euros / dollars. Next year DVD-RW drives will probably be in the same price range.

Why even bother with the combo? Dvd drive does dvd's and has backwards compatibility with cd's. Just get a dvd drive...they are cheap enough nowadays that there really is no excuse not to own one

I run Far Cry comfortably, and I have two DVD-ROM drives: a cheap 16X DVD-ROM from Lite-On, and my Sony DRU530A DVD±RW. *drool* :P
