It's old, text based and blazing fast. Espically over my broadband connection :). It's lynx

Hmm, Old and Text-Based. That narrows down the choices to, oh, I dunno, LYNX!

I bet the machine code one works faster.

I can't imagine rendering PNGs in noughts and ones.

Lynks sucks. Links or Elinks is superior (supports tables, colors, and frames).

Bah, if i want fancy stuff like colors or the ability to use a mouse i'll just use firefox. Sometimes it's just fun to browse pages using nutin but txt. :)

But it IS text-only... and normally I don't have color enabled anyway, since it defaults to B&W in an aterm for some reason.

As for GUI browsers, Dillo is ridiculously fast. Too bad it's GTK 1.2, and no CSS support, which is unacceptable for a graphical browser.

Well one could use HTTP commands such as GET to retrieve HTML pages by telnetting to port 80

Ah, but GNU screen lets you dump the console text into a file, from which you can strip HTTP headers and feed to links, or you can pipe to html2text.

telnet bbs.stardestroyer.net 80 |tee temp
[Type GET http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/]
[Telnet session closes]

cat temp|sed '1,3d'|html2text

And you get:

Code: Select all

Of course, links don't work, then again, grep through the source or open the html file you retrieved with a proper browser.

Of course, the typing for telnet would be significantly slower than using a text-based browser (not to mention the overhead from executing multiple processes), defeating the claim that "Telnet is the fastest."

Also, quite a few sites use transfer compression with gzip. This is easy with a decent web browser, but it's quite a hassle with telnet, making it a lot slower for some large static pages.

Dillo is stupid fast and very small .. unfortunately, it has no CSS support, as Pu noted. Very annoying.
