Flying Lessons in GTA3

Well, I'm sure some of you know about the Dodo in GTA3 sitting around at FIA. What I need help on is getting the little bugger to fly! I can take off, but after that, I go back down.
First time, I was going well, but couldn't turn or gain alititude enough to avoid some Staunton Island buildings.
Second time and subsequent times I can take off, but I can't keep up speed or something because I do a graceful little arc back down to the ground.
Is anyone out here more adept at this than I that can lend a hand? I'd really like to go check out the "Ghost Town" damn it! Saw the thing with my sniper rifle, now I want to see it "in person" so to speak. Please help!

Well, I can do it on the PS2, but I don't know about the other versions.
There are two runways at the airport. One that goes straight to Staunton and another beside it that goes at an angle. Go to the one that goes at an angle. This way you won't run into any buildings.
The trick is to just make sure that you keep the wings level to the ground at all times. You will still slowly gain altituse if you do this.
Also it might help if after you take off, you take your finger off the accelerater.

Best do it with the Rhino tank. Find the freeway section on the Staunton island section and fire the turret as it faces behind you. You'll soon fly like a modified Orion craft if you keep firing.
It's better in GTA: VC because you can get proper aircraft like the Bell Jetranger and Apache or Cessna seaplane.

On the PC Dodo up is numpad 9 and down is numpad 6.

So close yet so far...
I got to see Ghost Town with my tank...for the few brief seconds before my wildly gyrating tank plunged into the ocean.
Controlled descents is something I need to learn. Big time.

I know you said you can take off in it, but do you take off the right way? To properly take off you have to point the Dodo's nose into the runway until you see sparks under the Dodo. Release the nose and watch the Dodo soar. After one to two seconds level it off.
The best camera to do this is is the close chase cam. It'll let you see the takeoff sparks and is very good for aligning the Dodo perfectly. If you can see the nose over the wing of the Dodo in close chase view you're about to stall.
A friendly advice. Stay over the water. If you fly through the city you may trigger a Unique Jump. If that happens, you'll crash since the camera will make it impossible to steer the Dodo.

Yeah, I read the FAQ. I just needed to take it easy. I passed 328 seconds today (almost 5.5 minutes!), and finally say Ghost Town in all it's glory! I made two passes through it. Yes,
through it.
I didn't feel like cruising through Staunton Island, though I did do the circle of the city. Then I got bored and wanted to land...
My landing needs some work though. I should try properly aligning on the runway next time. Landing on the roof of the Dodo after a none-too-gracefull nose dive isn't the best way.

I fly the hard way; semi constant flaring/diving to maintain speed and altitude. I've done laps of the map through the streets, buzzed cars, etc. Once you get it going its really easy... I've never had to land tho, I always get snagged on a building or hit the roof or something.

I've flown the Dodo around the city before, and I think I've landed it. Can't remember my record time, I haven't played GTA3 in about six months thanks to school. But yeah, I've been to Ghost Town (even have the screenshots... can't remember which ones they are, will post later.
