Bad Losers - FPSs and the 'n00bish' problem

Anyone who's ever played a MP FPS online has had that first impression. After playing offline for a while, and figuring you're not so crap, you jion an online game of whatever. Chances are, inside of thirty seconds, the tactics you developed in single player are clogging the chat lines with 'n00b' 'spammer' 'ch333z' etc etc. Your choice of weapon, the way you move/jump/aim/whatever, offends everyone. You're instantly a pariah.

Now, this is pretty extensive, particularly on any small community like mods. However, noone ever thinks about why these things happen. For instance, UT was nicknamed 'rocket tag'. Thats what it was. Noone has a problem with that. However, in Specialists, using rifles(assault rifles) is being a 'sniper whore', in AvP2 using the smart is being a smart n00b. People complain that weapons are effective.

Similar with bunnyhopping; the game lets you jump without penalty, jumping makes it harder to hit you. So people jump. Its not their fault the game makes it an effective tactic. Sure, its incredibly lame and frustrating, but if you leave aside real tactic movement, it makes sense in-game because thats the way its set up.

I'm playing UT2k4 atm, and I've seen alot of people complaining about shock rifles. Shock rifles have instant hit, high accuracy fire. And, appartently, using it as an unscoped sniper weapon is bad, and makes me a 'n00b'. :rolls: Games I could single out for this include CS, BF, etc. The common denominator is that the games inherently contain and support these tactics, so you can't complain to players for using it.

When *I* complain about a kill, its because I'm frustrated. I know I died because I did something wrong, or wasn't paying attention. The net is, apparently, full of bad losers. I haven't played many MP FPSs... so everyone, share your favourite 14yo whinge. And remember, like I saw in someones sig, 'In UT, five headshots is a 'Killing Spree', in Quake it is 'Excellent', in CS its 'kicked by console' :)

For those of you that aren't aware. Being a CT and guarding the bomb site in CS makes you a "camping faggot". Same rule applies if you're a terrorist and you're guarding the bomb to make sure it goes off. In Counterstrike only the most clueless of n00bs protect their objectives.

If you're playing Soldier of Fortune 2 various comments will be made about the size of your reproductive organs if you fire off an m203. Don't even THINK about touching the MM1.

It's worse on Jedi Outcast Servers. Half the fuckers there use it as a chatroom. The rest cheat like hell. According to ediquate(sp) if a guy has his saber lowered he's a non combatant. So there i was fighting this guy, just as i was about to finish him he lowers his saber, i'm still swinging and i kill him, i was immediately kicked from the server. Thats why i stick to MMORPGs, not as many cheating cunts.

It's part of some sort of bizarre "macho" (as much as online play can be called that) culture with twisted rules that dictate that using the most effective weapons is somehow being a n00b. I propose a different answer: those who call you are n00b are actually sadomasochistic dumbfucks without the good sense to use the best weapons.

I remember earlier AHL versions, where the shotgun was sillyly overpowered, and it really was ridiculous and people self-regulated that one quite well. Later on they fixed that problem.

The funniest thing of playing CS at the latest LAN i went to was how my entire room decided to use riot shields. There was no stopping us, funny as all hell.

Here's the only screenshot of how much we owned.

Was so funny, it was reminiscent of those roman armoured charges.

Precisely. Let them scream about how much of a n00b you are. It'll show who the n00bs really are when the game's over and the score's tallied.

In Soldat, people get really pissed when you use the Grenade launcher and target well.

Nothing's more fun than one-hitting someone with a good ole' grenade. ;)

Nah, what's REALLY fun is, in a game with rockets, grenades, lasers etc etc. Taking someone down with a knife.

I hate JK2 servers sometimes. Those morons always fucking sit around like morons not moving and expect everyone to leave them alone. You kill them, you get bitched and moaned about till your kicked or "put to sleep" (your stuck lying on the floor), You stop to talk for five seconds and it's the very same people who gangrape you.

I remember playing AvP. The Preds were just using disc (homing, one hit kill) and had the gall to complain when the marines used smart guns. We agreed that they stop using disc and we stop using smartgun. Then they complained about us using the rocket launcher

AnimeJet recently called me a noob for using the Big Foot in GunBound. And according to her you'll get kicked if you use it in alot of games. I can see how this would be associated with newbs, although it's damage is shit at long distances it has a good chance to hit if you can get the angle. Ofcourse most of the people I see using it uses it poorly.

Actually, Big Foot is associated with noobs since it's the default mobile, and doesn't really take much skill to use...

I say screw you if you can't deal with my tactics. I never cheat, I never exploit game loopholes to do something the designers didn't intend be done. I pick up what I find works the best and I go straight to my objectives like a good team player. Sometimes this makes me the most prolific noob-like-player you ever saw, but no one ever complained who was on my team, and I take that as the true measure of complaint - as long as your own team members are grinning and enjoying a victory roll, you aren't doing anything unsportsmanlike.

Really the worst players I see are usually using Slug. Once was doing a 2 on 2 I had Armor, and my teammate was Slug vs a Boomer and a Big Foot. I wasn't use to the Armor and BF was really close to me, the boomer soon moved right on a ledge to get a easy shot on me. I missed him once(partly due to being new to armor partly due to metoer being in effect) and then got knocked out, after about 8 rounds my Slug partner still hasn't been able to bunge a guy standing on land with less space than his bot cause all he'll use is his secondary. I eventually got it myself with a lightening from the roulette.

The only thing that annoys me is people using scripts to time stuff that they'd never be able to pull off in actual play, like bunny hoppping in Team Fortress Classic.

Bunnyhopping: Yes, I bunnyhop. Shamelessly. It gives you a pretty nice speed boost, and I always only do it manually. I can do it forwards, backwards, sideways, diagonally, etc. to the point I can even change my orientation during a BHing run while accurately targeting opponents at full clip. Useful when carrying the flag. BTW I've never seen anyone else able to BH sideways or backwards, ever. BH Scripts are L4M3 IMNSHO...

Rocket-Jump Scripts: One would have to be a particularly n00bish llama with 56k to not be able to RJ without a script. I'm pretty good with my RJ.

Grapple Hook Scripts (Quake 2 CTF): FUCKING GH4Y!!!!! They ruined CTF on Q2 for me. Hey, I love Hook CTF, but I hate that it can be Sploited so easily with Llama Scripts.

BFG/Redeemer/Quad-Damage/Other Stupidly Powerful Weapon or Powerup: My philosophy is as follows: If the Server Allows It, USE IT and Don't Complain If It's Used Against You!

Camping and Sniping: I do it quite a bit, and I also like to kill campers. In either case, I'll use long-range high-power weapons like the Sniper Rifle or the Railgun. Good aim and good aim _QUICK!!!_ are essential. My theory on camping is 'If You Know How to Camp, You Will Probly Know How to Counter-Camp.'

Definitly and its sometimes funny when it doesn't work at times too.
While playing Medal of Honor, this fuck-tard had a wallhack and an aim bot ready to pounce me. Only that I managed to kill him first and this guy started bitching in the chat box of his disbelief of him getting killed with his "1337" skills.

On a generel note, Enimey Terriroy is good, but it's a touch to...........realistic at times.

For example, on their beach-landing level, it's nigh impossible to win if the Nazi's set up right. They have deployed machineguns everywhere, and the only entrace to the base that dosn't have a bagillion guards on it is a narrow strip that is ALWAYS land-mined.

Still, it's a riot to hear the peeople shouting that the Nazi's "must be cheating" after they die 20 times.

I can bhop backwards as a gorge in Natural Selection~

Anyways, I have a beef with a lot of HL scripts. There's scripts that let you do a clientside lastinv, which is faster than the normal lastinv which is serverside. It's a huge help for fades and skulks because of blink/slash and leap/bite. Complaining about bhop scripts will get you laughed out of most servers, but they do help immensely when you're skulking. Skulks will 'stick' themselves to surfaces which makes it almost impossible to bhop completely by hand. Celerity + 170% speed from bhop makes them very tough to kill. _special scripts allowed you to loop commands infinitely and quickly~ this led to all manner of exploits in TFC and NS... stuff like chophopping, infallable bhopping, quickdet with demoman's pipes. Then you had ex_interp, which was such a problem that it was blocked in one of Counter-Strike's patches.

If you have a jummpduck script in CS then that's fine, but if you need your console to win then you might as well be an aimbotter in my eyes.

BHopping. Never a problem in the games I play, but Tribes had something similar, skiing. It caused alot of controversy, but really made it possible for Heavy Armor to be an actual force against the endless sniper-lamers from other games.(A team full of snipers is not a valid means of winning. I don't care if you think it's 'm4d gh4y' that plinking a heavy turret with your shiny laser rifle will never even hit it's armor belt.)

Scripting of ALL kinds. I dislike it strongly. If I'm running a server(Almost never now), I post a nice, public warning that if I notice you're scripting, you're gone. Think it's mean and nasty? Play elsewhere. It's my machine, and I prefer people to actually play the game themselves, ne?

Bravo Vympel!

The game (whatever game) is about WINNING. The only rules, are the rules coded into the game. Who is fucking dumb enough to avoid a weapon because its too good? Course, we could never expect anyone to develop tactics to counter snipers, rocketeers, or whatever, no no, we should just ban them :rolls:

Spyder is absolutely right; if you play CS and don't sprint for the chokepoint, you're a n00b. If you lay down supressing fire, you're a n00b. If you do anything but run around like a chicken with its head cut off, you're a n00b. How can you camp (hide) in a game with OBJECTIVES? Of COURSE you're going to stay near them!

@Ein - Ain't it wierd how all the 14yo morons pay out things like bunnyhopping (and then do it themselves) and we can just deal with it? *sigh*

Not weird, just annoying. I just peg them with superior tactics till they type ` and /quit, thereby solving that problem nicely!

I have to disagree with Stark about one thing. I think people put too much importance into winning. It's about having fun. I'd rather lose a challenging(but not fustrating) game then win a easy one.
