Weird IE issue.

Weird IE issue.
For some reason when I go to save an image, it only allows me to save it as a bmp with no option for jpg or gif or anything else. Is their an option in IE to fix this?

Fucking A, I was just about to post this same problem. I've been having the issue for maybe 2 months now and I've been trying to figure out how to get it to save as jpegs again.Icehawk wrote:For some reason when I go to save an image, it only allows me to save it as a bmp with no option for jpg or gif or anything else. Lol, glad to see im not alone with this.
Whoa.... When I go to "Save As" on your avatar, I get an option for either a jpg or bmp, but when I do it on my avatar I only get a bmp option.....

Now this is strange. I only have the file saving problem when it comes to pictures inside message boards. I never used to have this problem, but now both at SB.com and SD.net I can't save pictures within the messages (signatures included) unless I save as bitmap.

This isn't a bug. It's a feature.
If a webserver is giving the wrong MIME type for an image, IE will automatically convert the image to a bitmap since it isn't really sure if it is what the website says it is. Internet Explorer can display the image, however, because it looks inside the file to see what it really is -- or does something like that, which is why things like the .txt trick work with it.
Why the programmers on the IE devteam didn't think of connecting those two components is completely beyond me. Better yet, they could have stuck to the Internet RFCs concerning MIME data and avoided the whole problem altogether.
Disclaimer: This is basically my own reconstruction of the problem, and if anybody has a better idea of IE's code they're welcome to correct me...

Is their a way to fix or disable this wonderful "feature"? Or am I stuck now with an IE that can only save pics as bmp?

Well, a quick search on support.microsoft.com turned up this link: Internet Explorer Saves Images As Bitmaps (.bmp Files)
It's still annoying that something simple like that can bork up the browser.

I followed the instructions on the MS website and everythings fine now. Thanks Crazy9000.
ggs, it wasnt just the Temp internet files, at least on my comp it wasnt. It only got fixed for me after I deleted the shit from the "Downloaded Program Files" folder in the windows root directory.

I have the same problem saving regular images. For the most part all you have to do is hit the refresh button after the page is loaded the first time and it'll work just fine, so you can save the image as the extension it's supposed to be.

Many thanks for the support people. When I get back home I shall fix it.
