P4 design retired

Post by phongn »

It appears that Intel is cancelling the successor to the current Pentium 4 core and moving in favor of a design more like the Pentium M (probably a version optimized more for speed and less for power and thermal considerations).

GOOOOOOO~OOOOOOOOOOD

Perhaps they'll also scrap the slightly scary idea of inserting that TCG component into their chips.....naaaa~aaaahh.

Yay!!! All hail P6 for the Desktop ! (I'm alreadyl using one... heheh  )(it's rumored that they will use the Pentium M for their newer Desktop processor). Then again, I'm an AMD fanboy, despite never using one... .

Newest AMDs are cooler than newest Intels.

And so ends an era of breakneck clockspeed scaling. To be honest, many have suspected this for some time; Intel was supposed to be somewhere between 4-5 GHz right now, but aparently the electron leakage of 90nm chips is simply too great to support such high clockspeeds. We knew this would happen eventually, I just don't think anyone expected it so soon.

For those of you that think this is an Intel-specific issue, think again. AMD is currently running at lower clockspeeds, but they are probably already feeling the pressure of this issue and when they hit 90nm, we'll know for sure what the effect on their product line is. Aparently, IBM is also having major difficulties with 90nm, and they say that the 3GHz PowerPC 970FX chips that they promised are little more than a pipe dream at the moment.

Diamond computer chips ahoy!!!!

Until then, I hope the latest chip isn't so packed that it's lifespan is low.

Hopefully someone can steal their Easily Installed Cooler technology and give it to AMD. They need it.

Fuck yeah. I hate that little green plastic thingy that you have to fuck around with a screw driver or something to pop over the little metal nubs and shit.

Oh lets not forget the possibility of Board Penetration(tm), particularly as frustration rises; AMD boards are seemingly designed with as many caps around the clips as possible, making it extremely difficult to mount, and AMD even changed from one little clippy thing to all three, increasing the difficulty of this Mensa-esque procedure further.

And with Intel you just pull on some clamps. Hmmm. :)

Actually, they did re-design the heatsink.

click me

Green plastic thingy is gone, but this time theres a cradle where you can insert the screwdriver so slipping is not an issue. Also, they kept the three-nub gripping instead of one because sometimes they tend to break off. (why they don't make the things metallic, I don't know....not like its hard to make them seperate from the socket, yet mounted to the PCB)

Only thing I don't like is that slow ass fan. Ohh well...
