ID Software thinks PC players are fucking idiots.

IGN: Last question. There's co-op offline and online for Xbox, but not for the PC. I doubt it could be a technical concern, so what's the reasoning for that?
Todd: That's a good question. The Xbox version, because it's in contemporaneous development with the PC. When it was started, basically was conceived as a console implementation of what we're trying to do on the PC, as opposed to a port where they take whatever we do on the PC and "boom" slap it on the Xbox. The Xbox version was designed from the ground up to support co-operative play over System Link and Xbox Live. There [were] some changes, concessions, considerations that had to be made from a lot of different standpoints in terms of stuff as mundane as how narrow the hallways are to the ability of the AI of the enemies to focus on one versus two players -- because it's no fun to play the co-op guy that the world seems to ignore -- to how the narrative of single-player story is told.
On the PC version, it was always conceived of as a purely single-player experience. The whole, "you're alone in your room and all the lights are turned out." It's an experience where we want you to be afraid to get up and turn the lights off because you're alone. Whereas, because the console market is different, because people like to play together. Now, we won't have the ability to do split-screen, but the console consumer is more, "Hey, we love co-op" and it's all supported within the Xbox with Xbox Live and System Link. It made a lot more sense for us when we were designing [the game] to include that feature, [which] was never considered to be a critical feature for the PC [version], given that our goal from the start with the PC version was to make it the best single-player game that id had ever made.
Words fail me.

WHAT?!? I thought Doom 3 PC was going to have multiplayer, albeit limited to just a few people. What the fuck is this bullshit?
I just love how PC players are really getting fucked now thanks to the highly similar architecture of the Xbox.

Where exactly do they think internet gaming and lan parties came from?

Score one for Valve. They're at least intelligent enough to realize that the driving force that kept Half-Life alive was the online community.

My Prediction for DOOM3, innumerable sales after release, people play it, finish the single player campaign, maybe dabble in the multiplayer a litte, then put it back down and go play counterstrike-source.

Another reason I won't buy it.
Though having said their next game will be on a entirly new universe, does make me intrested.

I applaud your decision, iD. Let these whiny little bitches spit and sputter about their precious lil' "co-op"

Am I the only one who thinks that there is a serious place in the gaming world for pure single-player games? I'm too young to have hit the whole Doom fragfest thing, but as far as my own experience goes, the real joy behind the original game was the single player.
If id wants to make a truly badass single-player experience, why not let em? Hell, it might even live up to the hype.

So.... Doom 3 for PC is completely single player with no multiplayer ability whatsoever? No deathmatches or CTF or anything? Wow.... that seems to go completely against ID has done in the past. But then again. Quake 3 was a pure multiplayer experience. I guess now they are just doing the opposite.

I don't really mind. I prefer single-player to multiplayer, 100% of the time.

There are occasions where playing a multiplayer game is fun and 'social' but on average I prefer singleplayer games. No fuckheads, no bullshit lag or dropouts, no l33t3 speak or whatever the fuck it's called etc.

well fuck doom3
I'll just buy HL2 for the singleplayer and after that I'll get hoocked at counterstrike2 for years

I don't usually play multiplayer because of lack of internet connection I had. But again whenever it was possible (especially in the hostel lan) I enjoyed it. So, as far as the single-player story is good, I don't mind lack of MP.

I like singleplayer but once you have finished it you get tired of it fast. However, if it has some descent multiplayer with it, you might playing the game for a loooong time (like me with HL:CS or diablo2)

Indeed, what do the
customers know and what can they do about it anyway?
Oh well, maybe a bargain bucket game instead since I'm firmly set on HL2 now anyway and forgotten all about the rival FPS systems out there.

How ironic that we have the excellent game Halo to thank for this: Many people believe that were it not for this game's stellar sales, the X-Box would have sunk quite early. Dammit! I wish Bungie had stuck to making it a pure PC/Mac game
.

Thirded: The only "pure multiplayer" game I play is America's Army, and I doubt I would even have it if it wern't a free download or if I wern't such a military buff. And yes: like you, I also
loathe "gamespeak"...

Ha, well fuck id then, i found cooperative play the most fun in both doom and duke nukem 3d, and in later mods like svencoop.
Well I'm sure doom 3 will go down as a bit of a let-down on PC then, as it probably was going to be anyway, but now even worse than it could've been.
Terrible terrible idea, I have no idea how it even got past the boardroom, I mean, were they all taking backhanders off Bill Gates or something?

Do you even know what coop is? It allows you to get the Single-Player experience WITH A FRIEND. Doom was fun, Doom playing the levels with a friend was fucking fantastic.

Doesn't really bother me. I had planned on renting DOOM anyways so I already planned on playing it on the X-Box.
As a side note: it pleases my sadistic side to finally see PC players suffer.
No offense but until recently, all I've had to play was consoles and now you know how I've felt for the past couple years seeing all you PC players get all the games.

You can fucking kiss my ass. The PC gets the good FPS titles (or at least it used to) because its the superior platform.

People, please, ID IS NOT CUTTING MULTIPLAYER OUT OF THE PC VERSION! They are cutting the co-op mode, which is a shame, but makes sense in light of almost no PC FPS ships with co-op. The only one I can remember is Serious Sam, although there might have been a couple other minor titles.
Look, co-op just isn't as big a demand on the PC side since players don't usually play right next to one another. I'm not saying that they shouldn't have included co-op, but just that this isn't the betrayal most of you are taking it as.
I'll say it again: ID IS NOT CUTTING OUT MULTIPLAYER!
