Are there any programs that let you "record what you hear" on your computer? Say, if you wanted to make a soundbyte from a DVD or something?

I'll tell you how I do it in Sound Recorder.

Start->Programs->Accessories->Entertainment->volume control.

Or, get to it via the Control Panel. Either way, I'll assume you're there.

Go to Options, select Properties.

Click on "Recording," check the list that appears. Make sure "Wave" is selected.

Hit OK. The Volume control should now read "Record Control."

Check the "Select" tab in the Wave column.

Open your DVD player and Sound Recorder.

Start playing your DVD, and hit record in Sound Recorder. If the little green line stays flat, you've done something wrong, or I've misdirected you. If it doesn't, you're good to go. Hit "Stop" and play it back just to make sure.

Let me know if it works. Oh, I'm using XP, BTW. I imagine the steps are similar in 2K/ME/98.

I don't get the wave option in the recording controls. I have stereo mix, whatever that is.

Hmm, it may be contingent upon the sound card and OS. Unless there's some documentation somewhere as to what's what, you may be best off selecting them all from the list, and then trying each one until it works.

Hmm, works with Stereo for me. Thanks!
