Simple question. Should I get Painkiller, and why or why not?

Download the demo and try it for yourself.
I thought it was pretty fun, myself. The ragdoll physics were amusing when combined with the "holy shit, that's a big piece of wood" stake launcher. :D

I can't remember, but was Painkiller the game Penny Arcade talked about as having structures literally built from individual bricks, allowing them to be destroyed completely realistically?

There' a level like that in the demo, a huge arena with temple ruins scattered around it. The boss in that level walks through them fairly easily, and tends to send car-sized blocks all over the place.

The huge bosses in that came are something else.

Really, I'd say the game is a lot like Serious Sam, just not quite as good. But if you liked that game, you'll like Painkiller.

I found Painkiller somewhat dissapointing. Don't get me wrong, it isn't a bad game, but apart from a few "neat" tricks (Painkiller, Stakegun's nailling effect, end of level bosses and some of the physics) the game doesn't really stand out from the FPS horde. I did occationaly get that bloody slaughter rampage feeling I loved in Doom and Serious Sam.

As Tuxedo said, like Serious Sam, but not as good. If you don't have Seriuos get it, if you loved Serious you should consider getting Painkiller.

P.S. DPDarkPrimus there are buildings that can be destroyed like that in only a few places in the game, most structures are indestructible. There are of course a lot of crates, barrels Etc. that can be destroyed lying around, but hacking them to bits isn't all that entertaining.

Well, I found Serious Sam to be boring... because it was repetive enemies and just wave after wave of them. I got bored twitching them to death after a couple levels. All they did was run into my bullets.

Well, then you will most likely find Painkiller boring as well.
