My ADSL *finally* got rerouted to my new house, so I plug it in and turn emule back on... and find that games are unplayably laggy and just pinging yahoo take around 2300-3000ms. I think my modem is screwed... right after it powers up I getmore sensible pings (like 150-200, I'm in AU) and inside of a few minutes its up around 2000ms.

I'm using XP, I'm using my modem as a router (a NB 1300) for DHCP, and everything works, albiet incredibly slowly. Ideas?

Well, check your firewall, I know XP has a built in firewall. If your modem has a firewall, or any configurable settings, check them. After that go to www.dslreports.com choose tools and try some of their tools, they'll really help you figure out where the problem is.

Oh and call your ISP, that's acutally their problem.

Yeah I've already gotten onto them; but since I've used this modem (months ago) for a different service, maybe I've muffed it up... thanks for the link

I'm not using XPs firewall or any soft; just the NAT on my router, and it seems to be setup okay.

Just try DSL reports and try running traceroutes to different locations. The dos command is tracert, it will list all the gateways between you and the address you've chosen. You might find that one of those gateways is really slowing you down. Oh, and make sure you clean up; adware, spyware, run an updated anti-virus; you know, just to be sure.

One of the first things I did was a traceroute on my isp and yahoo.com; both routes fail dismally at the first jump, and the rest are about even. Maybe my route table is messed up?

the traceroute couldn't get to the first gateway? Sounds like you got a firewall on somewhere.

The first jump timed out all three attempts, then it gets out on the second jump. But it's messed up; sometimes name resolution is instant, sometimes takes a second or two; sometimes pings are lowish (like800) usually they're 1500-3000... everytime I try something, it makes it okay for a few minutes, then goes slow again.

Change your setup, plug the model directly into the computer, see how that works. If it fixes the problem, then obviously there's something wrong with your router. Also, don't forget to try dslreports tweak test, http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks it's a very useful tool.

My modem IS my router; would turning the DMZ on help?

The Tweak Test results merely commented on my horrible ping and recommended changing my MTU and RWIN (my RWIN is at 65320 atm) and run a line test.

Their pingage tools aren't too useful to me, since I'm in AU... but my office uses the same isp and gets much better pings, so its likely my setup anyway. AND they describe my median ping as 'unreasonable' and discard it!

You did turn off eMule before you started measuring your pings, didn't you?
