Current state of SWG?

Anyone have any opinions on the current state of Star Wars: Galaxies? I'm downloading the 14-day free trial version presently, but I'm curious to hear people's opinions on it beforehand. I swore I'd never play a MMORPG, but the lure of Star Wars is too strong to resist at least trying it. Anything people like/dislike? Features of the game? Problems? Anything else?

I heard a lot of people jumped ship when City of Heroes launched.

Yeah, if you're going to get into an MMO, I recommend City of Heroes. I played EQ for a while, and did the SWG beta, and except for the Star Wars settings and characters, they were pretty much the same, shitty game. City of Heroes, while not completely different, has all the good things about MMOs and none of the bad, IMO (i.e. deep character creation so everyone actually looks different, a wide range of abilities and powers so everyone fights different, missions that are fun and interesting instead of just tedious, and very little lag due to each server making "copies" of zones that become too populated).

Wait until Jump to Lightspeed comes out. Looks good, and has an excellent pedigree.

Ive been playing since launch, and the game has changed in that time, and more changes are on the way. The game had a very rough start, and was very frustrating at times, but progress has been made. Though I enjoy the game and the people I have met, I will admit that this game was released a year too early, and playing up until this point has been more like Beta-Testing. Now several major revamps are being planned and will be implemented into the game within the next few months. These revamps, along with the Space Expansion: Jump to Lightspeed, will either make or break the game.

CoH more catered to casual player, and its meant to be that way. Its quick and fun and not too deep. While SWG is more pure tedious timesink where the devs depend on players to "make their own game" so to speak, got annoying, SWG had no rewards. Potential there, but they messed it up real bad.

i've played swg since release. Its a good game imo. Though at the moment its at a crossroads if they fail with their upcoming profession revamps and if jump to lightspeed tanks its gone the way of anarchy online. CoH is a very simple MMO, I think folks would be better off playing unreal tourney 2004 to get their simple gaming fix, plus its fun when you fire off a redeemer in the center of a crowd and the match announcer voice says "HOLY SHIT!"

I played SWG from December till Januarary. I'm sorry, i'm a total whore for SW but this game sucked. It was too hard to break into the game, charging you money to upgrade levels? Missions that require you to spend half the day with your finger over the forward button, and the eapons all looked the smegging same.
I'm now patiently awaiting World of Warcraft.

I just quit SWG, as well. I liked the game around when ehicles finally were added, but after that the game slowly got worse with each new patch. Then there was/is the Hologrind where where many, many players grind through almost all the professions in the game, including crafting, which messed up the economy.
Then the Jedi came. And they sucked, and needed Krayt Pearls to make a decent lightsaber. Next thing you know the Krayt Dragon went from being a feared mob for the big raids to something you had to be in the right clans to hunt or you'd never get loot rights for them. Each Pearl would sell for about 4-10 million credits.
They then added the "Corellian Corvette" mission for "fun space based content". Of course, the enemies there were rediculously overpowered (think a Stormtrooper with twice the damage and health of a Krayt Dragon) so no one but the mighties of powergamers had a chance to do that.
But the one thing that made me quit was that they took away Stat Migration. No longer can a player adjust his own stats on the fly like usual. No, only Image Designers can do that now, but it takes 10 minutes where you (and the Image Designer) can do absolutely nothing.
In short, the game became less and less Star Wars and more EQ in space... no, not in space, that would be too Star Warsy, and therefore is only an expansion. EQ with laser weapons.
Now, if only the City of Heores I ordered a few weeks ago would arrive...

I am a MMO Junkie, and I have played SWG, EVE, FFXI, LineageII, the alpha for WoW, City of Heroes, and PlanetSide.
SWG is definetely the worst MMO out there right now in my opinion, one of the main reasons is that it is supposed to be "Massively Multiplayer," But, you could have fooled me with gigantic sprawling cities, where you will have trouble finding one other person in the city. The only place you will find large groups of people are in the "clubs" where people are usually AFK leveling their skills. But, since you are just doing th 14-day trial version, I would say at least do that, as the novelty of just wandering around, exploring, and living in the Star Wars universe is pretty cool (But, the novelty does wear off quite fast, and you are left with a dull game). The strongest point of this game is the player-built towns you can have. Very cool, if you can find people to populate them.
EVE is a UK-developed space MMO. Pretty cool game without the "daily XP-grind" that most MMOs have. This game only has one server, and usually about 7-8k people online at any given time. But, you probably won't be seeing many people, until you join a corporation. The corporations are player-built communities and most of the fun of this game is joining up with a corporation, and leveling skills (you level skills by buying them, and then waiting for an hour or up to 20 days for that skill to level), and mining with the corporation and fighting NPC space pirates, or PC space pirates. This game does get old after awhile as you are just looking at the same space, and once you get your battlecruiser (the highest class of ship, which can usually be attained after a month) you don't really have much more to aspire to.
Planetside is a MMO first person shooter, and is pretty fun to just "blow off some steam," and this game can be quite fun if you team up with skilled tactically-minded players that don't want to just run around and "kill stuff." This is all I will write as it doesn't seem the original poster is interested in FPS.
FFXI is in my opinion the best MMORPG out right now, it currentely has the most people (500k+ subscribers with about 1 million characters) It's good that this game has so many people, as it is entirely party-based XPing. You cannot XP without a party in this game (only one class can solo). Some people consider forced partying to be the worst aspect of the game, others think it is the best. I enjoy the party combat, it provides a real social aspect to this game. The graphics are also the best out there for a MMO right now, and is simply gourgeous to look at.
City of Heroes has been suggested a couple of times already, and with the little experience I have with this game (Have played for a week or so). I have mixed feelings on it. It seems very casual and straight-forward, so If you haven't played an MMO before, and/or don't have much time to invest into an MMO, I'd suggest this one for you, as it seems the least time-consuming. This one doesn't seem very interactive with other players, or team-based.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give out my opinions on the top MMOs out there, and as you can see I am more skewed towards the MMOs that have a lot of player interaction, since after all they are Massive MULTIPLAYER online games, and I would like to play with many other people, and not just go off by myself all the time (a la L2, and SWG).

Just like sporkzen I'm still playing. Things are heating up on the Tarquinas server now. At least for us. The face of Rori shall be a scorched symbol for those who dare oppose!!!

Minor nitpick: it is developed by CCP from Iceland.

Well, the 14-day trial version crashes when I try to install it. Given the general opinion on SWG, I guess I won't be investigating this one.
Thanks for the feedback, though!
As an aside, I'm not remotely interested in MMORPGs in general. It was simply because this was a
Star Wars MMORPG that I even considered it. Generally speaking, I prefer to games
without monthly fees
I pay enough monthly fees already.

A good game that has MMORPG/FPS type feel and has no monthly fee, is Guildwars, its fast great fun, with touches of RPG but enough fast paced gameplay to satisfy FPS'ers. But it is in a fantasy/medieval setting.

The reason i prefer MMO's is because it's a gameing experience that keeps on giving. I started off several years ago in Ultima. I've moved over to Horizions. While people complain about the monthy fee i think most people miss the big picture. The average gamer will buy roughly a game a month, it'll last him or her that long, whereas an MMO is constantly getting better, constantly being expanded and so you keep playing it. In reality MMO's work out cheaper than pay for a new game every time you complete your last one.

Been playing it for about 3 months now and I really enjoy it, reguardless of how much the game takes a little thing called continuity and takes many a shit on it (such as Madalorians on Endor), I still enjoy playing it.
