Warcraft III is the SHIT

I bought this game on a lark yesterday (the warchest) and started playing late last night and have been doing so on and off all day today. My god I have never played a RTS game whose storyline drove me to keep on playing just to see what was going to happen next. The graphics are fantastic amnd the unit balance so far has been great. And Prince Arthus....I won't give away any plot twists but DAMN.
I just felt that I needed to share the gaming goodness that is WC III.

It's a damn shame that a fan campaign community for WC3 is practically non-existant. Which is why I haven't even bothered getting Frozen Throne.

WC3 is pretty good storywise. Gameplay has some lacking, bt the graphics and story make up for it mostly.

Don't worry Stravo, I'm pretty sure everyone knows what happens to Arthas in WC3- it's about 2 years old after all. I found Warcraft III to be a move in the wrong direction after Starcraft (which has a similar "good guy goes bad" plot)- the hero thing is just not my cup of warm beverage.

The plot for the original WCIII is pretty assumable. I heard that the Frozen Throne campaign has some nice twists in it though. I decided to stop playing Warcraft because of the lack of a good mapping and campaign community. Frozen Throne added so many tools to make great campaigns for WCIII, yet no-one uses them. I also didn't like how Frozen Throne really emphasized only using and upgrading heroes, and then utilizing no strategy, but that is another story.

The modding 'community' is 5 people working on 3 projects with 400 groupies who pretend to be modders (to hang out in there forums), by doing one or two bits of half-assed work (quick sketches, modified skins, unfinished multiplayer maps, 100-poly unanimated/untextured models, unoriginal and underwritten campaign and mod ideas, etc) as a sort of tenure; if asked to do work for a real project, they'll give you a workaround and go back to mucking on the forums and pretending they've busy working on new art/models/maps.
That's why a 35-page completed draft for an AvP total conversion design document gets as much attention as a 3-sentence post babbling about yet another generic '4th race mod' with no unit ideas. /rant
Rather good game, though.

I should have known you would have ranted about that, Uts.
Anyways, due to lack of mod community support, I find that I have no reason to buy TFT, or even play WC3 much anymore. I'll stick to SC.

Heh heh, welcome to Blizzard games.
If you think your addicted to WC3, you should see the South Koreans, they're fucking fanatical about Starcraft, another Blizzard made RTS. But yes, Warcraft 3 is a fine game.
Btw, I'd avoid World of Warcraft when it comes out or else you'll never leave your apartment again, not to mention never writing another chapter of StarCrossed.

I wish! They ran the beta tester selection thingy a week or two before I got my new computer. -.-

Warcraft III is indeed a kickass game, and it's expansion TFT is also awesome. I must agree though that the Hero system isn't my favorite.

I quite enjoyed WC3's story until someone pointed out that 3 of the 4 campaigns have the same major plot point.
Frozen Throne made up for that, as well as having the kickass RTS-RPG Ork campaign.

The only real thing that didn't sit well with me was the interface and economic system. I like some other stuff.

Warcraft 3 is a fine game, and though the modding community doesn't hold a candle to SC's community (remeber some of those LOTR games? I still find myself playing them from time to time) it's still quite a good RTS.
World of Wacraft is simply a great MMORPG, hands down. And if you've played everquest, moreso. And, in case anyone is wondering; yes I'm in the beta and have been for almost a week.

StarCraft had a great mapping community. I remember that friendliness that the StarCraft products had, especially the Campaign Editor, where with some of the hack-tools and extra-triggers, one could make a kick-ass map. Back in the summer of 2000, all I would do is play StarCraft and make maps for it, the community was that strong. I played it recently, and I have noticed that the game suffers from a lack of audience, I still see maps that were popular back during 2000 that weren't that good. It makes me kind off nostalgic that I will never go back to the golden days of StarCraft, and will have to stick with WarCraft III for my Blizzard-style creative needs.

I didn't really like the hero emphasis. Hope that when they come out with starcraft 2 in about a decade or so that they leave the heros out.

No,
has, present tense. There have been two extremely well-done I can think of off the top of my head that came out in the past six months, Legend of the Confederation II was completed just recently, and there are about six more StarCraft campaigns in the works right now that I know of. I am staff on a modding site, so trust me when I say this.

WC3 didnt last long on my hard drive. I did like the story, but the battles degenerated into a mess that was hard to control, especially on a slower system. I upgraded my machine at the time and it helped alot but we found Starcraft to be much better for multiplay.
WC3 has a good single player story line. Wait till you see the movie at the end of the human campaign. WOW!
Otherwise, my multiplayer game of choice right now is Empire Earth.

I disagree, and I can't see what everyone else sees in it.
The Human Alliance being threatened/Good-but-obsessed Hero or heroes quests to destroy the Evil/In doing so becomes bad was done with StarCraft's Terran campaign, and much better done as well (for a start more characters with better personalities - Duke, Arcturus, Jimmy and Kerrigan is greater than Arthas and that Paladin bloke, I can't even remember his name, and that wizard chick... yeah, I can't remember her name either).
Then you have the Bad Guys who Destroy the Other Good Guys who are Dumb/With the Former Good Hero who's now irreversibly Evil/Who ends up killing and destroying everything and everyone he ever loved, whilst pissing on their graves was ALSO done with StarCraft's Zerg campaign. At least with the Zerg you could build an army of 200 units (supply), but with WC3 you only have a upper limit of 80 or thereabouts. Big fucking deal.
Then you have the Mysterious Good Guys who are Stupid and Have a lot of Infighting/But they're led by a Dynamic hero teamed up with a Static Bureaucrat/and both then Realise they Have to trust someone who was Ostracised from their Society millenia ago. Hmm... sounds like the Protoss Campaign to me...
(except better. The Protoss were stupid, but the Night Elves DESERVED to be wiped out... meanwhile Zeratul > Demon Hunter wanker ... once again, I can't even remember their stupid names... shows how much characterisation went into their conception)
WC3 had so many problems IMO, from a storyline perspective. The central premise of the Human Campaign - that a pissy little death cult can bring an Empire to it's knees - just felt like a slap in the face. It didn't help any that almost EVERYONE in a position of authority in the Human empire was terminally idiotic. I felt no sympathy for the Alliance when it finally, deservedly, fell into ruin. None of the characters made me feel empathy for their plight. Contrast this with SC, where Arcturus slowly changes from being an out-of-the-blue revolutionary rescuer, who has a legitimate bone to pick with the Confederacy, to a backstabbing tyrant. The Undead didn't merit any sympathy anyway, being the fucking villains of the story. Moving on, then you have the Night Elves who's first act is to slaughter a Human encampment. Hey, why not? They're weaker than us and not expecting an assault. But when the Big Bad Demons pop up out of NOWHERE, let's hide like a bunch of fucking cowards.
The only campaign I enjoyed in WC3 was the Orc Campaign. It happened to be the only campaign which had something NEW in it.
I simply feel the storyline in WC3 was a piece of shit - considering the downright similarities it has with SC. I just think Chris Metzen hacked the story with a used formula - and from what I heard about the Expansion Pack, he did it AGAIN! The SAME fucking story, in Broodwar, is done in Frozen Throne! You have the New Human Nation trying to Handle the Big Bad Evil/And then Failing, miserably/Meanwhile the Big Bad Guy from before is now trying to become Uberking of the Universe/And by the end suceeds, making the ending real fucking Depressing... Jesus, would some new material be so fucking difficult to come up with?
Suffice it to say I didn't spend long playing this game.

So nice of you to put in a Spoiler warning for those who haven't played through the game yet, Jackass.

That's just ridiculous. Warcraft III is a fucking old game, that's like putting a spoiler warning in a discussion about the plot of The Phantom Menace. Or Starcraft, for that matter.

Well Stravo, the starter of this thread, clearly hasn't played all the way through it yet.

I happen to really like the hero as the focus of an army. It really fits into Warcraft; Mighty Heros and great leaders.
Don't compare Warcraft and Starcraft. Rather look at the progression of the series, from Warcraft 2 to Warcraft 3? They have made amazing progress, they could have just rehashed Warcraft with new graphics and units, but instead they chose a direction to go with the entire series which has lead to WoW wonderfully. I suspect that Starcraft will fall a similar fate; however, instead of small armies and great heros it will be some other direction, equally good, but suited for Starcraft. I suspect we'll have to wait at least another couple years for Starcraft 2, after Ghost I'm sure. ugh, Ghost; I don't know who made the decision to make that console only, but, ehh. I won't start on that subject.

I didn't like it all that much. The Upkeep thing pissed me off to no end. 12 units is a fucking Army? Jesus! If you sent in 12 units in War2 you'd be dead. I only played a LAN game with my friend and his brother, so I can't comment on the storyline aspect, but the play of it just annoyed me. That and the regenerating heroes thing. When they're dead they're dead damn it! Maybe in SP it's like that, and they just did it differently in MP. I hope so.
About the only really good part was playing a 3v1 us against the comps, and it took us a fuckin' hour to finally beat the bastard.
That and the very first time I played as the Night Elves, and my base got overrun, I had my giant fucking tree homebase walk over to my friend's base, which got a great reaction: "What the fuck? There's a walking tree in my base!"
That and I got to literally fight to the last. It was so much fun beating on my attackers with nothing but the Giant Tree of Doom!
