For Realms fans: He's both Elven High Mage and Netheril...

Hello everyone

I have a question for everyone. More opinion poll or suggestions, but hey, toss me your opinions/ideas

I'm running a group of characters that is approaching epic levels rather rapidly. One of the wizards (and Half-Elf) wants to become a Netherilese Arcanist (he has access to text's that allow him to meet the pre-reqs) and then learn the secrets of Elven High Magic (seeing as his elven mother's brother is an Elven High Mage, I don't see the problem, provided he also meets the pre-reqs for that)

Now, here's the question

Is this even feasible? Would an Elven High mage train him once he learns the secrets of Netherilese magic? Or if he became a High Mage first, would he be able to continue to advance after learning Netherilese arcane magic? etc

yee-hee-hee, first post

give it to him that combo would rock!

also the Elven High mage would train him as the character as an elf would protect his people while learning new spells to teach the Elfs as he is also an Harper(hint).

I would say it's possible, but he will become a serious outcast in Elf society. The rage about Netheril runs deep.

There's no mechanical reason why not. But there are strong cultural reasons for an elf (and if he's learned High Magic, he was raised in elven society, so no excuses about being raised outside elven culture) to avoid Netherese archwizardry. There are probably at least a few elves living who remember the folly and fall of Netheril, and the destruction it unleashed. They would not be happy about this.

If the player really wanted, I'd let him do it, on the same condition I gave the half-ogre player in my DragonLance campaign: You can do it, but don't expect to get along well in town.

Given that he's only a half-elf, and the Fall of Myth Drannor set specifically mentions that elves must sustain themselves beyond their normal length of time to be High Mages, I would say that he can certainly try, but would most likely die of old age before gaining their abilities. In fact, that set says that the reason only elves become high mages is due to their different mindset from humans. Since half-elves are partially each, it could easily be argued that they do not have an elven mindset, and cannot become High Mages. It could just as easily be argued the other way, though.

(Basically, you're the DM. Do what's best for your vision of the campaign)
