A few months ago, I posted a thread in here about Mac vs. PCs to get a good idea about their strengths and weaknesses because I was getting a laptop. After much research, interviewing, and saving of t3h money, I GOT MY 15" POWERBOOK TODAY!!! Am typing from it this very moment, actually.

Just thought I'd update y'all since you were quite helpful when I was asking my questions. Oh yeah, and I wanted to brag too. This is a fucking gorgeous machine and I LOVE it.

Ah yes, 15" PowerBooks are quite beautiful. Did you get the glow-in-the-dark keyboard?

Nope, I basically got the base model 15" (the combo drive), but with extra memory. If I could've afforded to get the totally pimped-out model, I would have, but no dice.

Nope, made the swtich officially today. In one of my college art classes, I had to use Macs non-stop for a semester and loved them by the end. I've only had hand-me-down PCs until now, so this is the first computer I've ever had of my very own! I'm pretty happy. :D

How fast is your wireless. My wife has really wanted a laptop or notebook but I've thought that the internet speeds are just horrible. This was about a year ago so I have no idea how shit is now.

Uh, shouldn't wireless speeds be irrelavant, since a 1Mbps connection can nowhere nearly saturate even an obsolete 802.11 legacy 2Mbps wireless connection.

Um, yeah. Like I understood what you just said.

My meager experience with laptops were with regular modems so my origianl question (which might have been misleading) was to gauge wheather a new wireless would be up to snuff with say, a desktop and a 56k modem?.....

Wireless connections can be broadband speeds.

Knife, I don't speak the same language those guys do either, but it's just as fast as the desktop computer I use.

Ah, cool. Guess I need to scrap up $800 to a grand then, for the wife. :D

802.11b, the lowest standard you can reasonably be expected to run into in the outside world, is roughly 200 times faster than a 56k modem. 802.11g, which is quickly replacing 802.11b, is another five times faster than that (ish).

for those wanting numbers, 802.11b runs at about 11mbps, while 802.11g runs at around 54mbps at optimal speeds.

They're already calling 802.11 "Wi-Fi", but I wonder how they'll distinguish 802.11g from 802.11b. I suggest that they call 802.11g "Wi-Fi Turbo Maxmerized!!!!", but they'll probably just call it "Ultra Wi-Fi" and make a snazzy logo. Spoilsports.

Well, I've got a cool logo:

I'm probably just obsessing over nothing. They never use my ideas. :(

Same here. If I do get a laptop in the future, it will be a PII-333, with a lid that doesn't lock, and broken plastic bits everywhere.

Uh... wait... you saved money by buying a mac? Are we in different dimensions or something? Because over here, a mac costs twice as much as a PC with the same stuff inside. Both for desktops and laptops.

No, she saved up to get it. Though the 15" PowerBook does have some very compelling stuff not generally found on consumer Wintel laptops in its range.

I wanted the one with the funky shiny keyboard thing. But they're expensive, so I just use that healthy LCD glow...

(I also need to pimp up the memory at some point, but that won't be a major problem)
