Favorite 16-bit era gaming moment.

For those of you who remember the 16-bit wars between the SNES and the Genesis, what was your favorite game, level, or boss from either of those systems?

Mine was the final level of Super Empire Strikes Back for the SNES. It had three different showdowns with the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, as well as some really hard parts where you had to do lot's of platform jumping, but there were tons of flying enemies (snowtroopers on speeder bikes) who could knock you back and turn a perfect jump into a disasterous fall into bespin's upper atmosphere.

Hell, just thinking about it makes me want to take my SNES out of storage and play it again.

The final battle with the emperor in Super Return of the Jedi also deserves an honorable mention.

In Chrono Trigger- where you beat Magus for the first time and find out that he didn't create Lavos and where Lavos subsequently pops out- great twist.

Seeing Ganon in SNES glory....sure he was easy to beat, but it was nice to see him defined.

Also SMB was not quite 16 bit Gandalf. SMB3...yes...SMB1 & 2(japanese or american) were not quite there

I got Sega Genesis right after they upgraded it to the 32-bit console, so I don't remember the wars. :(

My favorite games are Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, and Tetris Attack. I'm really good at Tetris Attack, and it can be a very fun puzzle/twitch game. I find myself doing things that just don't seem humanly possible.

My favorite moment has got to be the scene in FF6 where peace has been declared, the heroes are telling the espers that they really want peace and the empire will cooperate, everybody's feeling good, and suddenly you hear that laugh. Kefka comes in flanked by two soldiers in MagiTek armor, his silly circus music plays, and he starts one of his macabre genocides.

I tell you, that was a cool game. The ending was great; I saw this creepy composite creature with Kefka at the top, and the Ultima Girls blasted their way to an easy victory. It's easy to win when your three strongest magic users all have economizers (making MP irrelevant) and know the most powerful spell in the game. 8)

Ah, FF6... yeah, there's about a dozen fucking AMAZING moments in that game. One of my favorites was the battle with Ultros in the Opera House. The whole setup was so strange and contrived and silly, and the music! Vwee he he he!!

EDIT: And let's not forget FF6's most cinematic scene, rescuing the kid from the collapsing house in the World of Ruin.

That pissed me off so much! I ended up wasting a ton of Force power using Elevation to salvage my jumps. I liked the Vader fights, though. I mean, he flies, he sends your blaster shots back at you, he throws shit at you. Awesome.

For me, it was definitely Super Mario World. Beating Special World and ending up back at Yoshi's house, except suddenly the whole world is fall.

My most memorable monent? Opening up my Sega Genesis on Christmas day back in 1991 and playing Sonic the Hedgehog for the first time, one of the happiest times of my life.

Before that, my parents (mom mostly, but dad didnt help any) refused to get me a video game system or anything when I was younger. Mom said it would "ruin the TV" or "damage my eyes" I was so jealous and pissed off because for years before that, most of my friends had NES and even other systems and it didnt phaze my moms moronic views in the slightest. It came as a major shock on that Christmas day many years ago now and actually sitting there playing through that Sonic the Hedgehog game that I had been hearing so much about but never thought I would play, was just one of the most incredible things ever.

The next best moment would be kicking Robotniks ass once and for all (in the 16 bit era that is) in Sonic and Knuckles.

Huh? SMB 3?? That was an NES game and therefore only 8 bit. It was released in early 1990, a year I think before the 16 bit SNES even came out in North America.

First off, Super Mario Brothers was on the NES, with 3 being released in 1988. However, they did come out with two compilations. One had SMB 1-3 plus what is dubbed lost levels here in America which was really SMB 2 in Japan. The other compilation includes Super Mario World. I myself after acquiring a SNES a few years back play the hell out of the first collection. I just beat SMB2 the other night as a matter of fact. Woot!

Now that I'm done being king geek I will continue

Icehawk and I share a common moment. I remember wanting that damn SNES. I had even stood in line at the local KMart to play the Super Mario World demo. I wanted it so bad. Mom said if I got anything it would be a Genesis since my brother had just gotten one for his b'day from his wife. I was like okay.

I didn't even expect it on christmas. Mom pulled the last present out from under the couch and it was the Genesis. Playing Sonic for that first time. I was like fuck Mario. The Sonic Games are a true rival to the Super Mario collections.

After that though, I guess I have a few moments.

X-Men 2 Clone Wars
Fuck the first one. I can only use Cyclops constant optic blast a few times?!?
In the second one, I'm Wolverine with claws always fucking extended and no one is safe. You climb up walls and across cielings and then come down like a mad SOB.

Likewise there's the Spiderman game based on the Fox Cartoon. That game is bad ass as well.

Ecco The Dolphin Tides of Time
I'm sorry, maybe it gets boring after a while, and it is a long fucking game, but damn, it's gorgeous. I have yet to see Nintendo pull shit like that out on thier 16 bit system, and right now, it looks like I never will. Pastel Link, get some.

Street Fighter II Championship Edition
That's right. All these punk kids with thier Street Fighter on SNES. I wanted to play so bad, and when I did they'd kick my ass cuz I didn't have a way. Not only did I get my wish, but this edition supposedly was toted by the critics as being superior to the SNES's version. Not only that, but the six button controller was akin to the arcade making it far easier to use. After that it was all down hill and I still to this day piss on 3D fighters as I fully embrace the 2D fighter era. Hail to the King baby!

The first time I triggered Super Sonic on Sonic 2, by accident, with absolutely no prior warning of what would happen.

I still remember that.

Holy fuck that was an excellent game (hmmm Mega Collection beckons...)

You know you want to. Everybody does it. Give in! (Don't make me wave my hands.)

Yeah, Chrono Trigger and FF 6.

The thing that sticks out in Chrono Trigger in my mind...the very first time I played it I was a little kid at a friend's house fiddling with his game and accidentally sent myself directly to Lavos, getting everyone killed with the first attack. Then, I saw the ending with the destruction of the world. Holy crap, this giant monster killed me and now the world is destroyed! I totally freaked out.
