Ok, so I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks because now we have Panda Titanium on our computer.. and in so doing, the computer's internet won't work. The comp is hooked up to a router, then a cable modem, and the Internet works fine... but taking off NAV made the Internet stop working on the computer. How can I remove Norton Systemworks, but keep the Internet working?

Is Norton Systemworks the one that includes a firewall?

Because if it's that, then something may have slipped by right when you uninstalled it, and is blocking access to the internet.

No clue...are you accessing the router through Ethernet or Wireless? If so, does the computer just disregard there's a cable running through/there's a wireless access point nearby? Or does it recognize the cable/WAP, and connects well, but the internet still doesn't work?

Ethernet. When I uninstalled NSW, the cable is working fine, but I can't get an IP address (even though both the modem and the router show activity). I reinstalled NSW, and -poof!- the Internet works again.

I had a problem like this with one of my Win98se machines. There's something norton does that really screws things up. The only solution I know of is to keep it on the machine and live with it.

Apparently systemworks is changing settings for your LAN adapter for some reason I can't even comprehend. I can't see why systemworks, which should have nothing to do with your Ethernet, is doing this.

Do you have any sort of "restore factory settings" option for your computer? Or have you backed up your files, and have a Windows CD ready?

If you do, then try removing the Ethernet adapter from Device manager, and letting Plug n Play reinstall the drivers for it.

That will have to be made ready...

Have you run live update to make sure any potential Norton bugs are fixed? Then try uninstalling Norton again.
I've only seen the problem you're talking about when uninstalling firewall programs like ZoneAlarm or Norton internet security improperly. This might be a silly question but you are using the add/remove programs to uninstall it and aren't just deleting files, right?

Just reinstall, run liveupdate until norton is completely patched (you have to run it, reboot and run again until it says you are completly up to date) Then use add/remove programs to properly uninstall. Also if you visit Symantecs website there are some uninstall tools you can get that will help completely uninstall botched uninstalls. Good Luck

It may not even be necessary to do a factory reset, since WinXP should have drivers for nearly every Ethernet card. Unless you have an oddball card that no one's heard of, I'm confident XP will recognize it.

Ok, so would just replacing the Ethernet card possibly work?

No no no, just remove the entry in device manager and let Windows recognize it again. It should work after that.
