Screw University ITs...

Ok, I'm not gonna go into all the bloody detail here, but let's just say I'm raging mad now.

So I turn in my laptop for 2 days for my Uni to load up necessary software. Today, I get my laptop back. But guess what! They managed to delete critical drivers and preloaded software, while installing theirs!

Grah, I'm never entrusting my laptop again. Tomorrow, I'm going to supervise their reinstallation, since they seemed to have fun playing around with my settings. Who knows what else they did with it...

 I'm more calm now...looking back I feel like a moron, but oh well.

Anyone else had slipups like this before? When people you entrust computers to, who are reputedly professional, somehow manage to discombobulate everything?

I once attempted to optomize my brother's computer's 56k modem, but then instead screwed it up and made it have the performance of a 5.6k one.

Well, one friend tried to make a macro for Word on my very first computer, a 166 Ghz Gateway, when he messed up and made the menu bar give three file buttons.

I am university IT, actually the only IT guy at the law school.

I am very careful to avoid discombobulation, and we don't require software outside of an antivirus program of some sort and the students can install that themselves. I'll probably end up installing a couple hundred copies of exam software this term and there will probably be at least one fuck-it moment in there someplace though .

What drivers and software were hosed?

Wireless card, display adapter, touchpad drivers...

I have accounted for human error, but it's like these guys deliberately went out of their way to mess it up... This didn't seem like an accident.

Alright, could a mod please delete or HoS this thread please? I regret even posting this, and it's sticking on me like a damn leech.

What school do you go to? This is a horrendously inefficient means of installing software on students' machines. We just make a CD that automatically configures what the user needs configured and give it out to people for free. Sure, it takes development time, but it's better to pay a few developers for their work than what's probably a few hundred install monkeys.

Anyway, why don't you just ask them what needs to be done? I know I'd never let a school take my box and just go to town with an admin account.
