new Halo 2 trailer
Microsoft released it on the Internet, but you need a PC and Idiot Exploiter and a connection fast enough to stream it. Great advertising guys.
Anyway, Bungie.org mirrored it here. It appears in theatres too.
EDIT: Its about 2 megs.

Its good to see an add, but the trailer seemed kind of corny, and attempting to dum down the story. Most of the clips come from the Halo 2 single-player trailer, which we know cannot be real clips from Halo 2 because parts of those scenes from this trailer come fromt he parts of the game which we know aspects of the game have been changed since the 2003 E3 trailer. I will wait until Q3 hits to see something really neat.

LOL seriously man what would you expect from a game that belongs to Microsoft.YT300000 wrote:Microsoft released it on the Internet, but you need a PC and Idiot Exploiter and a connection fast enough to stream it. Great advertising guys.

From the game itself? Well, for starters its made by Bungie, so my expectations for Halo 2 are right up there with KOTOR 2. And Microsoft has made good games in the past.Kamakazie Sith wrote:LOL seriously man what would you expect from a game that belongs to Microsoft.

Microsoft has no reason to make it available to their competitors. However, that's pretty stupid to not allow an advertisement....oh well

For me it's as big an event as Half Life 2, KOTOR 2, Doom 3, Republic Commando, etc. It just happens that Halo 2 has the most news.Stark wrote:The HALOites are as mysterious to me as the Church of OMFG!!!!!111... am I missing something on why HALO2 is a big event for anyone other than XBox only owners?

There was an easter egg in the trailer.

I visited the main site, and while I was viewing another page on it in a different tab, when I went back, there was a big honking black box in the middle of the screen with the following text.

There are a lot of XBox owners out there, and it was popular enough to make novels about it, so if you read the novels (which aren't half bad, apart from "The Flood", which was crap), you might want to pick up Halo 2 just to follow the story (and if "The Flood" is any indication, you're better off with the game than whatever book eventually gets published because the book will just slavishly describe the game's action and cutscenes anyway).Stark wrote:The HALOites are as mysterious to me as the Church of OMFG!!!!!111... am I missing something on why HALO2 is a big event for anyone other than XBox only owners?

My hunch is that they've learned their lesson with "The Flood"; they'll probably hire Nylud (who did the other two books) to do a novel on Halo 2- but have it cover content that it isn't covered in the game. Things like the actions of other Spartans etc.Darth Wong wrote:There are a lot of XBox owners out there, and it was popular enough to make novels about it, so if you read the novels (which aren't half bad, apart from "The Flood", which was crap), you might want to pick up Halo 2 just to follow the story (and if "The Flood" is any indication, you're better off with the game than whatever book eventually gets published because the book will just slavishly describe the game's action and cutscenes anyway).Stark wrote:The HALOites are as mysterious to me as the Church of OMFG!!!!!111... am I missing something on why HALO2 is a big event for anyone other than XBox only owners?
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Slight update, I just downloaded the High-definition version from Gamespot and the damn thing is a hardware hog and a half! It is a 1080p WM9 video and it couldn't run on my 1.6 Ghz Pentium M without dropping frames; I had to run it on my Opteron system just to get a decent framerate. Jesus, if this is the codec that gets used for the eventual HD-DVD standard, we're going to need hardware acceleration to play it on our PC's.

From what I hear, WM9 HD is actually a highly efficient codec (much more so than MPEG-2 ever was) the problem being that the software decode on it is a huge performance dog. Hardware acceleration must be far superior otherwise it would have been too expensive to implement in a set top box.Darth Wong wrote: I still think they should be smart and go with Blu-Ray HD-DVD instead of this fucking stupid ultra high-compression scheme of theirs.
Anyways, it's pretty much moot since even though HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are at least 14 months out, I'm still quite certain that Blu-Ray is going to swiftly win the format war. You know why? Because Sony knows they are going to sell millions of PS3's by default, so why not include Blu-Ray and win the standards war without even trying?

This is strikingly similar to what Bungie did leading up to Halo's announcement.
http://marathon.bungie.org/story/cortana.html
I like how you can read the Cortana letters and understand how they reference the game (hindsight and all). Annoying thing about that page is that out of nowhere, they start talking about Halo after they discover the Cortana message hidden in the Myth:TFL 1.3 CD, and they don't bother to tie it in with the game.

No doubt; there are lots of codecs more efficient than MPEG-2. But the sheer amount of data required for HD (6 times more pixels) mean that it would have to be reliably 6 times more efficient in order to achieve the same results, regardless of the complexity of onscreen data. My personal suspicion is that they would end up having a lot more 2-disc sets when they try to do high-quality encoding jobs, because if you use a high-compression codec such as WM9 or DIVX to pound a 4.7GB MPEG2 DVD down to 800MB, I doubt there will be no quality loss. The Kernel wrote:From what I hear, WM9 HD is actually a highly efficient codec (much more so than MPEG-2 ever was) the problem being that the software decode on it is a huge performance dog. I hope so.
