Majora's Mask and Navi

All right, I went back through Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask in an attempt to keep my gaming mind off of waiting for Fable, but it raised a question I had never had before...
Was Link looking for Navi or not? I had always assumed that at the beginning of MM, when it said that Link was looking for a close friend, that he was looking for Navi...but at the end of the game, he doesn't find anybody.
Since they never seem to say who he was looking for, and in the end he rides off still looking, I guess it's still open ... hopefully we'll one day get to play a sequel in which he finds who he was looking for.

Don't the Oracles games for the GBC take place immediately after Majora's Mask? Do they shed any light on the subject?

I'm almost certain that he was looking for Navi.
And the Oracle are its own time period of Zelda(it doesn't fit in any other, Impa is a large woman and Link and Zelda don't meet until they are in the foriegn country)

I always figured it was Navi he was looking for (actually, at first I thought he was looking for Epona
but that didn't make any sense, obviously), but I also always knew he looking at the wrong place. Because Navi is locked up in the Temple of Time together with the Master Sword. Just look at the ending of OoT; Navi flies up to the window to the enjoy the view or something, but Link turns around, sneaks out and closes the door behind him with Navi still inside (although we don't get to see that last part)
! That's what she get for talking all the time!
However, I read an
article which says that he is actually looking for Skull Kid and it makes some sense. The thing which does not make sense is why anyone would want to be looking for him...

I thought he was looking for Saria, but that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense, either.

Wasn't Navi's relationship with Link just a temporary partnership to see that Ganondorf was defeated? I've never played any of the Oracle games so pardon me if this is a stupid question.

Technically, it should be. By the rules of the Kokiri, Navi should go back and find a real Kokiri child to be with, since by defeating Ganon, she fulfilled her promise to the Deku Tree.

I've never really sat down and tried to analyse it step-by-step, but I've always thought that it was about finding Epona, and after finding her(?), Link was already caught up into helping the world he found himself in.
Some clarification: In my belief, when we start the game, Link wasn't looking for that "missing close friend", but was just on some journey (maybe scouting around looking for potential threats to Hyrule, training in case he has to fight Ganon again, or simply exploring the world outside of Hyrule).

Yeah, but where would Epona have gone? And when he leaves Zelda, doesn't he already have Epona?

Epona gets taken by the Skull kid, that's who he is looking for at first.

Yeah, but he's looking for a friend before Epona gets taken. That's why he leaves Zelda and Hyrule in the first place. It's while he's searching the Lost Woods that Epona gets taken from him.

IMHO, Link
wasn't looking for that "missing close friend" when he left Zelda. The prophecy(?) about the hero and his "missing close friend" was about the Skull Kid stealing Epona, and drawing Link into saving the land from the falling moon.

I don't have the game, box and manual here with me (it's roughly 115 km away right now), but IIRC there was nothing in the "prophecy" or in the game itself that states that Link was already looking when he left Hyrule and entered the forest.

Then why did he leave Zelda and Hyrule? And how come he finds Epona early in the game?

"In the land of Hyrule, there echoes a legend. *Shrug* I did say that I don't have the game with me, and I haven't played the game since I finished it soon after it was released years ago. Conceeded.

According to my brother, he was indeed looking for navi but never found her in the game and he never returns to hyrule which leads to the zelda game in gamecube.

The GC Zelda game is on a seperate timeline to Majora's Mask. Wind Waker follows on from the destroyed Hyrule of OoT, after the HoT has defeated Gannondorf and returned to his original time.

It's on the same timeline, just different time period. 'splians why the Triforce is in one piece in LttP when Ganon, Zelda, and Link still had fragments after OoT. Oracle duo I think are Pre-OoT.

Unfortunately, there's no official word on what order the games go in. Theories abound, but most of them put OoT as the first one.
Here is a common one.

Now that I think about it, I can't place the oracle duo anywhere. It has to be before WW, cause the Zora are still in their aquatic form. But is has to be after OoT, because that is the start of Ganon. But in the opening, isn't the triforce in one piece? Or do they talk about the symbol being on their hands in the late game. Also didn' Myomoto say that LttP's Link and LA's Link are the same Link.

All the original Legend of Zelda games for the Game Boy systems are stand-alone. That makes it easier, I guess.

Actually it's been theorized they involve the same Link, taking place some time after ALttP with LA following the Oracle games.

And it fails to explain how the Great Sea would have been drained.
Honestly now, take a look at the WW backstory. It mentions the HoT defeating Ganon, then returning to his own time. The timeline of young Link would not be aware of this.

I've heard that said many times, but I've never seen a direct quote. I'd think it more likely that LA's Link is the same one who left Hyrule after LoZ:AoL
My personal guess on the Zelda timelines would be...
Timeline #1
OoT (World of Adult Link after he returns to the past)
WW
Timeline #2
OoT (World of Young Link)
MM
LttP
Oracle of Ages/Seasons
LoZ
LoZ:AoL
LA

I seem to recall that Link's Awakening supposedly happened immediately after Link to the Past.
