Okay, repeat after me...
"my monitor is not a Federation starship."
On a more serious note, it's just getting old, or has possibly been exposed to a strong magnetic field.
It won't explode in a spectacular fashion, but it probaably will die on you at some point. Not easy to say when though.

what type of monitor is it, and how old exactly? if it's a VGA or an older CRT, my suggestion is to get a new one. there's plenty of new, nice flat screen CRTs available for relatively cheap.

Try moving the cable a little.

A good tap (or wack if you want) might help, or turning it off and on.

Use the monitor's degauss function at first, before you begin junking it.
...and if all else fails, junk it and buy a flatpanel. Much much easier to look at than a CRT.

You do realize that a decent LCD monitor is going to run him a minimum of $500, right? I could buy three or four damn good 19" CRT monitors (Samsung 900DF) for that ammount of money.
