Is this gonna go the way of that last time MS used the selfsame software on both your hard drive and the internet?

why is it that all the red alarms go off when i hear about microsoft releasing a search engine that uses both the internet and your hard drive?

Because in order to search your hard drive it needs to be able to see all the content, and if they try and do this via the net, that means code running locally on your machine.....with Mr.Gates reputation for top quality code with no flaws or security leaks though, there's no need for any alarm.

Um, why would you need to search your own hard drive while searching the internet? Isn't that what the Search button is for?

WTF? You search the internet for files, information, pics, whateve you don't have. Why would you want to search your hard drive in the proccess?

Search harddrive, search internet, use connection to internet to send "anonymous statistics" to Microsoft...... I can smell it from here already.

It's a pretense...

...for this.
Good call, Shinova.

Erm... they can't seriously expect anybody would be stupid enough to use that.
Then again, this world has all sorts..

IE/Explorer was snuck in on us when we weren't paying attention...
But then again, we are keeping a very watchful eye on MS these days in order to keep from getting $crewed again.
ATTN Billy-boy! Trick me once, Shame on you. Trick us twice, Shame on us.
We won't be tricked twice.

Google is actually planning on HD search. The idea is not only can you scan for filenames and such but you can do deeper scans to search for content within it.

Unfortunately differing file formats would make things a bitch to work with- may be solved with plugins... isn't Longhorn/GNOME Storage supposed to do this?

Bah! Microsoft will never be able to compete with Google, because Google has an
l33t s34rch p4g3!! .
(that is, they offer "Hacker" as one of the available languages for the search page: They also offer Klingon and Bork )

Jesus...most of that is unreadable.
Anyway, for some reason I don't even trust Google with HD search. They already proclaimed that their programs would read your mail on Gmail, exploiting a feature like HD search could probably get what Shinova said as a result.
Then again this is probably paranoid rambling, so feel free to toss it.
