Ok then.

I'm trying to run an old compilation CD of DOS games that I received for free a long time ago. Here's the thing: When I run DOSBOX, mount the cd, and run the 'install' program on the CD, here's the error I get:

Shell Error

MSCDEX CD-ROM DRIVER NOT LOADED OR BELOW VERSION 2.10

Any help in bypassing this? The CD is called 'Cd Challenge Pack', if that helps.

Can you install without DOSBox? I've found the mounting thing to piss me off royally. I usually end up mounting straight to that particular directory to make it work. Forgot the specifics though since it's been ages since I've used it, and never tried installing with it.

So...good luck I guess, and try installing without DOS Box if that works.

See, its not really meant to run stuff off of CDs. Just goto your command prompt and install it that way. THEN run DOS Box.

I tried. Here's the error that I get:

'DOS utilities APPEND.exe, SUBST.exe, and maybe JOIN.exe, could not be found. '

Then it says I need to go get my Dos Disks?!

If you're missing DOS files, using DOSBox is going to be no good.

Grrr. I can't find my DOS Disks, does anyone know where I can snag Append.exe, Subst.Exe, and Join.Exe?

Does by any chance the installer have a .BAT extension?

I know that SUBST and APPEND are now internal commands (like DIR).
The first one assigns a drive letter to a directory.
The second one is like PATH, but it applies to data files, not only executables.
JOIN is a bit more obscure, I can't tell what is the last time I saw that command. I think that it was merged with the COPY command (you can join files doing "COPY /B file1+file2+file3 destination").

If this is a compilation CD, I think you should check subdirectories and stuff, and try to install them manually. Maybe the Installation program is really crappy and unnecesary.

The install is a .BAT, and I tried doing what you said. If I run the individual game .BATs, it just brings me back to the installation screen. If I run the individual game .EXEs, I get the following error:

"environment not setup correctly'.

So it looks like I'll have to track down old copies of those programs

BTW, the final message states that it requires DOS version '3.3 or above', so if anyone has 3.3 versions of those utilities, I'd be much obliged.
