Replacing XP with 2000

Post by Hamel »

My XP system partition is NTFS and is on the same HD as one of my FAT32 game partitions. I'm thinking that booting from 2k CD and slamming the XP partition during setup should work, but some google links have suggested a complete wipe of the HD itself. Because I've never "downgraded" to an older OS without doing it fresh, I'm having my doubts.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

So why are you downgrading?

Anyway installing 2k on an XP partition ough to wipe only your documents & settings folder and windows folder IIRC, though from setup you can destroy the partition XP is on and recreate it and reformat it as an NTFS partition, thats like installing it fresh.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

2k3 is the best MS OS yet, sure it's a server but making into a workstation was easy, I even played doom 3 on it.

I've heard good things about it, but I'd rather stick to 2k until I get a better computer.

:D

The only reason why one wouldn't want to run Win2000 is the lack of compatibility for older programs, but I guess WinXP sorta has that problem too.

Hell, the Compatibility Mode feature in WinXP is available for Win2k as well (as of SP2 . . . though we're clear through SP4 now.) You just have to enable it.

Hamel, may I ask what it was about XP that brought about this desire to downgrade? I'm running 2K right now, and every once in awhile there are some shiny XP features that appeal to me, but I don't want to jump in and find myself wishing I was back in Kansas.

What's the point in running XP if I'm not using most of its exclusive features, such as the Fisher Price visuals? 2k runs a little faster anyway. I think the only thing I'm going to miss in XP is msconfig from the run menu, but I can do similar things in 2000 without a problem. After all I did take classes in 2k Server and Advanced Server.

There are some tweaks under the hood not related to the GUI and XP SP2 will attempt to be a massive security overhaul that may not be backported to 2K. Some applications (like Avid FreeDV) also require XP

SP2 is something I do not give a shit about, and 2k is secure enough. To my knowledge I have no applications that are incompatible with 2k.

To be honest, this is something I should have done last year while I was taking classes.
