Do you regualrly finish your games?

Post by Stravo »

I was getting more games ready for sale on Ebay and I noticed that there were so many that I never finished. I played until I got bored and then just stopped, never came back to it because I got caught up in the next new game.

There are very few games where this is not true, Civ III:Conquests being one that I still regularly play. (MY Mayan EMpire recently completed an amphibious invasion of Europe, 40 Advanced armored units crushed the pathetic Byzantine/French Alliance and now sits on the border of Asia Minor eyeing Egypt hungrily as the Zulu send gifts to appease the sun god.)

But I digress...there are tons of games I simply have not finished, the last one I played all the way through was Warcraft III and started the Expansion and stopped about half way through the Night Elf campaign with the same symdrome...done this, did that give me something new.

Anyone else notice stacks of games collecting dust?

i've got tons of games i've played yet never get around to finishing for some odd reason. . . .Omega Boost i absolutely loved but could never beat the final boss. also got a ton of SNES games i've played yet never got around to finishing, like Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, and a handful of others.

Well, the answer is yes, and also no.

It depends so much on the type of game.

RTS's are the ones that I most regularly fail to play all the way through, 'cause so often it just seems like wash, rinse, and repeat, except with less resources.

RPG's are the second culprit, if they're engrossing and they have a good plot that isn't repetetive or tiresome, then I'll usualy play them all the way through and come back for more.but if they're not made involving enough then they just get boring.

I can play strategy games at great length, but that doesn't really count 'cause often you can't "finish" the game as such.

Action games (fps's, starfighter games, etc...) I usualy play through all the way, barring large flaws in the game (ai, difficulty curve.......)

**Edit** Guess it's all about immersion, which is a lot easier to maintain when you're right in the action. These days, games rely alot on immersion. or at least players are accustomed to feeling immersed in a particular game.**Edit**

Always finish. Or get to the ending at least, sometimes that isn't really finishing though (GTA being a noteworthy example).

And Stravo, what games are you selling?

Yes, because dammit I feel sorta jipped if I don't(though some games are truly all experience and the ending sucks big monkey cock).

I finish most of my games.

I have finished all but one of my console games (the one I didn't finish was because it sucked).

On computer- I never bothered doing ALL the Age of Empires campaigns- it got old fast. I almost but not quite finished Klingon Academy. I almost but not quite finished Bridge Commander. I almost but not quite finished SFC3 (I was too busy SLAUGHTERING people on the dynaverse). I finished JK2 and Jedi Academy.

How do you usually price your games, and what do you package with them? What is necessary and price-determining (obviously the game).

I find that most of my games I've actually finished them. With the exception of a few truly craptacular games I've finished them all. Some of the more fun ones multiple times.

I have to agree with you about Civ3: Conquests. My Ottoman Empire just finished decisively crushing the Persians with a horde of Siphai. I left a few of them alive to serve as a bulwark against the largely hostile Chinese (the only AI on my tech level). Right now I'm securing my hold and consolidating my fighting units at the front in order to make another big push, hopefully allowing me to move into India and southeast-asia and grab the luxuries there.

Most of my stuff is either a few years old or missing instructions so I just price them at about $1 unless they are in a bundled lot (the way I usually sell stuff) to increase interest and overall selling price. If I have the instructions I of course include them, if I have strategy guides I include those as well and when bundling I try to bundle games of like interest, for instance I have Heavy Gear I, II and Mechwarrior II: Mercs all in one package.

I'm not doing this so much to make money as to make space and make a little cash on the side to fund my ebay buying of rare hard to find soundtracks and other fun hard to find stuff.

Only game with a definate ending I can recall that I didn't finish in the past few years was GTA3, because of this one mission that was so freaking hard.

I do not finish every game. If I get a game and I do not find it entertaining enough, I simply get rid of it. (trade in, sell etc) I have
done this many times, and will probably do it many more times.

One of the ones that really bugged me the most was not finishing Final Fantasy VIII, heck I barely started and just lost interest because I could not get into it the way I got into VII and X. I hated that stupid card game and the junction system required too much thinking. The Materia system was both simple and complex at the same time and made sense to me. X's system of advancement took some getting used to but makes sense to me now.

I feel like VIII was a great game that I may not given enough of a chance to.

you didn't really miss anything. i found 8 to be painfully dull compared to the other FF games myself. hell, the only reason i wound up beating it was because i cheated. otherwise, the ending was rather. . .well, less than interesting.

It depends. Something like GTA I do go through the story quite a bit, but then when I get to an annoying mission I just go on random killing sprees. Also, there are plenty of times I do it just because I'm bored, so I don't even try for the storyline.

For a lot of RPGs, I get bogged down in leveling up and stuff. And then I get bored. One exception seemed to be Eartbound. I beat that.

An FPS, I'll play it through.

RTS, well, I keep going and going without trying to win. Take Star Wars Rebellion. I have an Empire and Alliance game going, that I've been playing for over three years now, off and on. I'm not trying to win, just play. If I wanted to, I could easily gather my forces and crush the remnents of my enemies. But I don't because I like building.

WarCraft II I beat, both campaigns. And I went through the Human STarCraft campaign, got bored one night and wanted to see the videos so I just cheated my way through the other campaigns. :D BroodWar I haven't really gotten into playing the story for whatever reason.

Anyway, my list:
  • Jedi Knight: Finished, Dark and Light Sides, all videos. :D
  • Final Fantasy 6/3: Nope, in WoR and could go into Kefka's Tower if I wished because I have the Falcon under my control, but I want to max out levels/magic first.
  • Earthbound: I had it in the Time Cave part (final area) for the longest time, but finally went through and beat it.
  • Secret of Mana: Sitting on my computer. Haven't played through yet.
  • Super Mario RPG: Same as above.
  • Grand Theft Auto: Yes and no. Cheated to get the videos, mostly because I didn't feel like spending the whole day doing it, and just go in for the mass destruction anyway.
  • Grand Theft Auto II: Same as above, except I only got it fairly recently and never got into it as much.
  • Grand Theft Auto III: Up in Staunton Island, I've mostly gone to mass destruction for my PS2 version when I get bored. As for the PC version, well, I use that for a webcomic. :)
  • Grand Theft Auto Vice City: I only rented it, got up to the second island and got me a helicopter, then had to return it.
  • Spiderman 2: Beat it! Still going through to finish all the side missions and stuff, as well as random funness.
  • Jane's USNF 97: Mostly just like flying in it, never did the campaigns much (except what I made on my own :D ).
  • X-Wing: Gone through some of the ToD's, alas, it's been finicky with me so when it randomly crashes I just get frustrated and don't bother.
  • TIE Fighter: Haven't gotten into that one as much, though I did manage to get into some of the Secret Order stuff.
  • X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter: Um, you can't really "beat" this one. I have played through all the Single Player missions though.
  • X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (Balance of Power): Alas, no. I did start playing, but the CD was stolen before I could get far. :(
  • X-Wing Alliance: Nope. I always get distracted by the Flight Simulator part and getting to fly all sorts of cool starfighters to ever take the campaign seriously.
  • Other Flight Simulators (Jane's USAF and Jane's F/A-18 ): I've never managed to get them to work properly on my computer, so I really can't play them at all. :|
  • Star Wars Rebellion: As stated above, have multiple Alliance and Empire campaigns ongoing. Yes, I have taken the time to beat them (and lose) just to see the videos. But I do have my one main Alliance campaign and one main Empire campaign that, like I said before, have been going on for at least three years (actually, I'm sure, even longer than that).
  • WarCraft Orcs and Humans: I got this after I got WCII, so I never could get into it. I liked WCII much, much better, so I never bothered.
  • WarCraft II: Beat it as both Orcs and Humans.
  • WarCraft II Beyond the Dark Portal: Sadly, this suffered the same fate as my XvT BoP CD; stolen before I could finish.
  • Jane's Fleet Command: Never did the in-game campaign, just ones I made up myself. I never did finish up that WWIII thing I was doing for myself (although most of the Russian Fleet and the heavy hitters of the PLAN are gone...though I did lose a CVN, mostly because I wanted to so I played as the Russkies. :D ).
  • SimCity 3000: Can you beat it? Really? Well, either way my CD has gone missing so I'll never know.
  • Super Mario World: Beaten it so many times it's not even funny. I'm even in the whole "Secret World" with that beaten, and all the paths to Star Road found. The thing at the intro says 96 and I think it goes to 99, so there must still be something I'm missing... :?
  • Super Marios All Stars: Beaten 1 in the past (who hasn't?), and 3. 2 and LL still unbeaten.
  • The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past: I'm up to Gannon's Tower but haven't survived it...yet. There are also more heart pices I haven't found yet. Damn it!
That's about it for the games I've played seriously. Huge list, eh? :D

I finish almost every game I have.

RPGs are the only exception. Final Fantasy 7, and KOTOR are the only RPGs i've ever beaten, dispite playing over a dozen of them

I've got the same problem as Stravo. I just get bored with games after awhile. Believe it or not, it was only a few days ago that I finally beat Half-Life and Opposing Force (Blue Shift was short enough that I actually beat it when I first got it). I plowed through both in two days each... of course, when I first got them I was much younger and wasn't too hot with FPS games. I generally don't "beat" most RTS games, I've always found their campaigns to be lacking (I usually play skirmish type games). I've got so many games collected over the years, but I've only beaten a few.

Most of my games I have finished, the only ones I can think of that I haven't are some of my NES games, Pikmin(which I've only got recently), Baldur's Gate 2, and GTA(need to upgrade my comp before I do that, runs poorly on my comp.

Funny you should mention this Stravo, but no I don't finish most of my games either. The really good ones I do but alot of them I get tired of or distracted by life and never get back to it.

I've got Monkey Island 3, NeverWinter Nights, and others that I bought installed played for a day or two then never finished.

I don't often finish my games. Mainly because many are the type you can't finish. But the games I rent for my PS2 I tend to finish in short order.
