Windows XP Upgrade

Post by Cal Wright »

Alright, alright. I finally broke down and got XP. Luckily I can make it look and somewhat act like 98 so that's a huge plus. My main problem is this. It wants you to activate XP within 30 days, but I don't want to. I don't like having to register or any of that. What happens if I don't activate?

If you don't activate you will no longer be able to use it without activating it.

if you dont activate it windows will shut down. But the good thing is if you brought a copy of it legit then when you have nothing to worry about. Windows put in the activations system to keep people from making copys and installing xp on a lot of systems.

You got the XP Home edition. The Professional edition doesn't have that bullshit.

Yes it does, unless you are running the illegal volume license edition (illegal in the sense that it is only meant to be installed on OEM machines).

Back to your question, you don't need to register to activate and activation doesn't do anything but make a hash of your hardware config and send it to Microsoft (which they CANNOT use to reconstruct your hardware specifications) so it really isn't a big deal.

There are hacks on the internet that have the "you have xx days left to activate" timer to reset every day, so you *always* have 30 days left to activate. However, I don't know where to get it, and don't ask me to find it either ;)
Try Google.

Such programs are illegal and really should not be discussed on this board.

Yes, every retail and OEM copy of XP has WPA. The ONLY version that doesn't is the volume license edition (which is not availible to consumers through legal means) and perhaps the MSDN (although I'm not 100% on that).

Huh, I stand corrected then.

It's not a big deal. Go through it first and see if you object to it. I don't believe it asks for any private information.

I wonder though, how does the volume license edition (aka XP "Corporate") get leaked? Does some IT at some company start making CD images secretly? I mean, Microsoft does verify who they sell to...don't they?

The two images that already were leaked both came from a source inside of Dell. Although Microsoft tried to counteract this by locking out certain Product Keys from Service Pack 1, savvy users quickly found that one could change the product key post installation with ease which negated any effort by Microsoft to undo the damage.

You can be assured that Microsoft will be implementing some extremely Draconian security measure into Longhorn when it comes around in order to counteract all this piracy.

All applications that can have product activation do so on their MSDN download.

Which is why I said I don't know where to get it and won't find it for him.
I just said they exist.

Okay, two new problems.

First, in Star Wars Galaxies, when the game goes to launch, I get a
SWGCClientSetup_r.exe-Unable to locate component
error window

This application has failed to start because d3d9.dll was not found.

Next problem is with the Team Speak program.

Error
TDSoundOut.Open(DirectSoundCreate): No sound driver is available for use.

I've reinstalled Galaxies, and I've downloaded all the updates that Microsoft throws at me. Now what?

Never mind on the Galaxies bit. I have no fucking clue what I did, but it works now. Teamspeak still popped that error up, but I went into settings and switched it to direct sound
