I've for a long time gone with windows media player for my video needs but as of recently wmp has popped up displaying advertisements to the point where I got rid of it. I use winamp for audio and will not deviate from that but I need a player that can play .avi and .mpg formats. Anyone know of a good (and free preferably) video player I can get?

Definitely get Quicktime. Or DivX. Probably both.

Quicktime files are all over the internet, plus the player is very useful (and the movie trailers at Apple.com/quicktime are great). It plays mpg, mov, and avi. Nothing else plays the .mov files.

DivX plays AVI and DivX encoded AVI's (nothing else plays DivX encoded AVI's).

Uh, no, don't get Divx unless you're planning to do your own compression. ffdshow is a much better decompressor.

It cannot interface with VFW or DirectShow codecs/filters on the PC, making its AVI playback virtually useless. It is decent for playing QuickTime video, however.

Incorrect.

As for media players, Winamp 5 will play video. If you're getting a bunch of popups you probably have some spyware installed on your computer that is interfering with things. Consider Media Player Classic as well. It is capable of playing QuickTime and RealMedia as well :)

Windows Media Player 9 doesn't display advertisements as far as I can tell. I agree with phong, you most likely have spyware.

But if you insist, I'd vote for Winamp Video. Plays video just as good as it does music, and when you go fullscreen its controls don't interfere with the video playback itself.

Winamp is great for audio but i've had little luck getting most of my mpeg and avi s to play in it. Also I know I have spyware (been spending awhile nuking it) but even when I destroy everything known windows media player will come up with some movie trailer which I don't want.
I will however try media player classic if someone will tell me where to find it.
Divx however I have tried and have had zilch luck with running many files it used to run flawlessly (upgrades aren't always better).

http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml I find this one to be the best all around media player.
