MSN/Passport being a bitch

Post by InnerBrat »

I've just installed SP2 on my computer, and now I can no longer log on to MSN nor Passport.

MSN messenger says my username or my password is incorrect. The passport log in page is not being found.

HOWEVER, it seems others are currently on MSN. WTF is going on to stop me from being able to log in?

When trying to get to the passport login page:
the connection was refused when trying to contact loginnet.passport.com
When trying to log into MSN messenger:
Signing in to .NET Messenger service failed because the password is incorrect or the sign-in name doesn't exist. If you have forgotten your password, click Help in the main window then click Help Topics
When trying to follow a gmail invite:
The connection was refused when trying to contact www.google.com
Occasionally when signing into passport in IE, I get diverted to an Incredifind page.

Terr, if you're not going to help then STFU.

Did you try turning off the XP firewall?

Just for a shot in the dark, have you tried using Miranda IM and the updated MSN protocol?

well, what do you know? Windows firewall blocks its own applications.

Thank you. I didn't consider that Microsoft software would be THAT stupid...

Sounds like a name resolution problem.

Try this.

Start a command prompt

Start->Run->Cmd.exe

Type "nslookup"

You should get somthing like this:
Default Server: ns4.bredband.com
Address: 195.54.122.204

> loginnet.passport.com
Server: ns4.bredband.com
Address: 195.54.122.204

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: loginnet.passport.com
Addresses: 65.54.183.192, 65.54.179.192

> gmail.google.com
Server: ns4.bredband.com
Address: 195.54.122.204

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: gmail.google.akadns.net
Address: 216.239.51.107
Aliases: gmail.google.com
Please post what you get.

Wierd the XP Firewall did't block those apps for me.

Well perhaps they did and I did't notice.

Hope you got that problem licked now :D

If thats the case, then it should be a simple matter of creating an exception rule to allow it access to the internet.

Why would Microsoft be stupid to be so secure that it distrust it's own apps? I mean, Messenger could be a security risk.

I actually recommend you use something else other than the Symantec firewall. Its rather pathetic given how many times its expoited. You're better off using Kerio Personal Firewall.
