Hypothetical DVD ripping scenario.

Post by Alferd Packer »

OK, let's say I rip a DVD that's region 2(or whatever Europe is). Would it be possible to burn that data onto a region 1 DVD and then play it in North American DVD players, or are there all sorts of safeguards to prevent people from doing just that?

Well, the program I use for ripping, DVD Shrink, has an option to make the ripped DVD region-free, so it can play in any DVD player. I'm sure other ripping programs provide similar options.

Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shape-shifting Master of Darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil,
but a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow
was struck, I tore open a portal in time and flung him into the future, where my evil is law! Now, the fool
seeks to return to the past, and undo the future that is Aku...

you might be able to, though it'd likely be easier in the long run to get a regionless dvd player. they're relatively inexpensive nowadays.

The program I have for DVD ripping also changes/strips out the region codes. I assume that it is a common feature.

I assume the computer you're using to rip this disc with has either a DVD drive set to Region 2, or is Region-free. That seems to be the key step here.

Getting a region-free DVD player may be easier in the long run, though it's not cheap.
There are two kinds of people in the world: the kind who think it’s perfectly reasonable to strip-search a 13-year-old girl suspected of bringing ibuprofen to school, and the kind who think those people should be kept as far away from children as possible … Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between drug warriors and child molesters.” - Jacob Sullum

I don't see why not, though you still might have problems if you can't play PAL.
