How often do you defragment your harddrive?

For me, almost never- I'm doing a full run of xfs_fsr for the first time (Linux filesystems are less prone to fragmentation, but they still do- well it depends on which one you are using).

I do it twice a year which is fine for my 28 gig HD.

Not often enough, plus it becomes almost completely ineffective above around 50% full...

Did it for the first time on my new computer just a few days ago, and I plan on doing it monthly.

Get Kerio, Ad-Aware, SpybotSD, Spywareblaster, and Hijackthis.

And dump that Buggy Insecure Browser and get Firefox. It'll even import your IE bookmarks and login/passwords for you. :)

Last time I defragged was when I had a 486 DX 50 and was running C&C Red Alert.

I defragment whenever my space on my HD gets filled, or If i start to notice a severe lag issue with loading. Usually thats nill since due to microcrap I usually reinstall everything every 6 or so months of use.

I've never done it, because until I read this thread, I didn't understand what the hell it was for. I'll probably try doing it sometime soon and see if anything improves.

It REALLY helps. I defragment once a week. I know that's too much, but say I finish a paper and now Im staring at my computer and its not doing anything for me. Why not spend the time jacking up my performance marginally?

And to all of you who never defrag: you should. You don't notice the slow decay of performance, but a newly defragmented system is a wonderful thing.

Allready got Ad-Aware but I use Opera, and why do I need 4 Spyware removal programs beside Ad-Aware? :?

Kerio is a firewall
Ad-aware is a spyware detector & remover
SpybotSD is a spyware detector & remover which covers different stuff
Spywareblaster is a spyware infestation preventer,
and Hijackthis is used to detected advanced forms of spyware.

They arent all the same.

Besides, its smart to run atleast Adaware and Sybot since one will pick up what the other won't, and vice versa.
