Remember that gloomy sounding trademark SquareEnix registered a while back, Dirge of Cerberus? Well, that's actually going to be a new FFVII game!

TOKYO--According to the upcoming issue of Weekly Jump magazine, Square Enix is developing a Final Fantasy VII spin-off that will feature ex-Turks gunman Vincent as the main character. The game, which was first hinted at in April, will be titled Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII.

The only information currently available on the game is that its story involves a mysterious group called the DGs attacking peaceful towns in the world. The game will take place one year after Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the CG movie that recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival and is slated for release next year on DVD and the PlayStation Portable's UMD format.

While Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII is slated for release on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, Square Enix lists the game's genre as "undetermined," which suggests that the game is still in the early stages of development. GameSpot will bring you more information on Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII as it becomes available.

Excuse a FF VII fan's ignorance but what is FF Advent's children and how does that fit into the storyline from the original game?

Advent Children is a 90 minute (i think) CGI movie that square's been developing. The setting takes place a few years after the original game, iirc., but involving the majority of the main characters. Rather than post spoilers, check out adventchildren.net for full info.

Thanks. So then I take it the theories of the end of the game cinematics meaning that the world was devastated were wrong. Interesting.

well, midgar was totaled in the ending FMV, but that doesn't necessarily mean the entire world was. from what i gathered the very ending fmv with red XIII was well into the future, considering the hinting during the game that his species was incredibly long lived.

I never thought the world was totalled. I always interpreted the ending cutscene as Holy doing what it was supposed to do: save the planet. It is actually a really interesting comentary on environmental policy. In the end, despite Jenova and Sephiroth and all that melodrama, the real threat to the planet was the mako reactors sucking life out of the planet. Holy used Meteor to destroy Midgar, the real threat to the Planet. At least, thats how I see it.

Oh, an on topic: sequel = cool.

Basically, the Final Fantasy film was very much like VII.

As for the sequel: meh. I didn't want them to do this and I feared this was what Advent Children was. It seems they are cashing in on the greats of the series after revamping I-VI and doing a first with the sequel to X, now they turn to my hallowed VII.

I remain pessimistic at best. The game may have had an annoyingly Eastern open ending, but I liked that and fear the sequel (from the viewpoint of a character I never cared for collecting) will taint my previous view of the glorious original.

Hear hear. One of the things that annoyed me when I heard of Advent Children is that, well, it's Final Fantasy. Every game has a coherent, self-contained storyline, without any really interesting untied threads at the end to make a sequel out of. They just saved the world from the ultimate evil. Full stop. That's it. How interesting can a contrived continuation of that be?
