MMORPGs

Simple question. What MMORPG are you playing and what do you think of it. Please no bitching about paying more than once for a game.

I am currently playing Lineage 2. Not a bad game but it's really ruined by money farmers who KS, PK and Grief you. But in it's favour it's PVP from the off. If some 12yo punk planing on daddys credit card steals your kill you can frag his ass and laugh as his dead ass.

Dropped Galaxies as it turned into teh sux0r. Right now waiting for Guild Wars, can't wait to play in the next preview at the end of October. From what I played of it during E3, it's looking really sweet.

Im in WoW beta right now and it kicks ass. I'm playing a warlock right now and hes very cool. The warrior is a little uber kick ass. But the game is more balanced than everquest is. Best MMO ever.

Hey, start posting some examples of stuff you can do. Every MMO game I've played has just been far too stale for my tastes... even though the concept of one would, theoretically, be my perfect game.

I just don't think they're good enough yet. Someday, someday... but not today...

I play a little game called Nexus... I've played it for a long long long time(about 6 years, going on 7). It doesnt have too too many players, so its a bit more intimate than most mmorpgs I think. Its really easy to get tired of it, (because of some of the people, some corruption... etc.) but I always end up going back.
Yay.

SWG is a pretty sweet game. Now, if you're a power gamer, it sucks ass. But if you a casual gamer, or an actual roleplayer, it is pretty fun.

This game will make it or break it depending on Jump to Lightspeed. A lot of my friends are in the beta (I should be in it soon), and say it is awesome. If it's like the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series, but on a MMORPG....it could make SWG one of the best MMORPG's ever.

If it sucks...well...I guess I won't renew my subscription in Feb. However, I don't think it will suck. We'll see I guess

WoW beta, soon to be WoW full-time once they finally finish the game. It's great. Just great. I could go on about everything that is good with the game, but the answer can be simply summarized as "everything." Sublime MMO.

On Scylla at least it seemed to be the reverse. I ran an RP-lite Stormtrooper guild (attracting pure RPers is difficult for a heavily PVP-oriented guild). Things were pretty good up until February or so. The economy was crap at that point; the Empire's military hardware (in this case Stormtrooper armor) was left in the dust by the cheaper, easier to obtain, and several times better composite armor. After the Commando craze wore off, whenever one of our teams ran into Rebels they'd be comprised of the following:

Teras Kasi Masters
Master Riflemen
TKM/MR
MR/Doctor
TKM/Doctor
Or a defense stacker (pistoleer/fencer/TKA/fuck-knows-what-else)

Needless to say, our logical character builds were annihilated by power-gamed ones (I went through a fair bit of Commando, Squad Leader, Carbinier, Rifleman, and finally Bounty Hunter (necessary to take down Rebel bases... *sigh*) before I had enough and quit). We had a pretty cool roleplay community called Tombra on Naboo, but they were always fairly small and eventually petered out.

And don't even get me started on the number of times we heard "fah q IMP f4gz" whilst patrolling/raiding/storming whatever Rebel target presented itself.

Dropped DAOC for City of Heroes, waiting on City of Villians and Guild Wars. Reading up on Wow still hasn't hooked me yet, seems like its the same old thing just prettier and new. I want something better than the last game I played, not an updated graphics package.

Linage 2 is a pretty sweet game. You have 5 races. Human, Orc, Elf, Dark Elf and Dwarf. And each race offers 2 choices when you start fighter or mystic. When you get to 20 your character branches off into different directions.

I myself am a lvl 30 Orc Raider on the path to becomming a Destroyer.

Lineage 2 offers several unique things that other MMO's lack. Castle Sieges, PVP arenas where you don't recieve penalties for death, and come Cronicle 2 we're getting a Lottery game and more extensive in game gambeling facilities.

This is the 4th MMO i've played and so far it's one of the best game play wise. Being able to go PVP from day one is great. Sure some times a wee bastard frags me from behind but nothing is more satisfying than a 30 -vs- 30 PVP battle like i've had with my clan The Black Plague.

WoW looked to cartoony for my tastes when i saw it a and i've never been a fan of EQ.

SWG was the new shiny that everyone wanted, now it's WoW. Six months from now the lemmings will be whining about how WoW is teh sux, and slavering in anticipation of something else. Me, I'm still playing Ultima Online.

I considered for a long time going back to UO still do when the grind gets to me. I stopped playing UO last December to go play SWG. After i ended SWG i moved to Horizions. Horizions was a nice concept. IMHO it has the best interface and engine of any MMO i've seen, the mix of crafting and adventuring was perfect. But they have a hatchet man for a CEO and the game was butchered by a development team who where too under staffed.

Many people are wetting their pants over WoW and EQ2, but many of these are the same people who said Final Fantasy On-Line was gonna bury EQ and UO. For now i'm watching MMORPG.com closely and we'll see.

WoW has been getting lukewarm reviews from those who haven't seen it, so I take it upon myself now to try and give a bit of perspcetive on the game.

First off, the entire system is run through quests. Everything you do in the game is to complete quests, and there rtuly are thousands of quests with more being added each day. More than enough to keep you busy. However, this hardly railroads you into certain actions. You can just go out hunting and exploring if you want, but the extensive quest system does away with the "aimless wandering" nature of many MMOs. You can still do everything fun that you can do in all other MMOs, but you can never get bored cuz there is always another quest out there.

Game downtime is decreased on all accounts. Traveling from one side of the world to the other takes a matter of 5 minutes, not half an hour on a boat like in EQ. Health and mana recharge is done at an excellent rate. Not so fast that you will recover from all damage while the battle is going on, but fast enough that there is almost no downtime between battles. And when you get too hurt, just take a bite to eat and you are back on your feet at full health 20 seconds later. Death is also not as big an inconvenience. You can either walk back to your corpse, which takes time but you dont lose ANY EXP, or you can ressurect at the graveyard where you respawn for a minor EXP hit (about 1/20th of your level). All these factors make it so that you are ALWAYS doing something, not just sitting and waiting for things to happen.

The economy has a bunch of built in regulations. Everything has level requirements to cut down on "twinking", and many items cannot be traded once you wear them. the most powerful cannot be traded at all once you pick them up. This makes people quest for their own gear, not spend all their time buying and selling up to the highest levels of equipment when you are still level 6. Nonetheless, there is still a healthy trade economy since there are many good items that are worth trading. You just cant pass on your "godly plate of invincibility" to your level 3 warrior. Also, there are a lot of sinks for money to keep prices from getting inflated. Every time you learn a skill you need to spend money, and at level 40 everyone goes and buys a mount, something to help you move around faster. These are VERY expensive and help take money out of the economy at about the same rate it is getting put in. Another thing to take money out of the economy is guilds. Buying guild tabards costs a decent amount and helps take moeny out. The implementation of these things could very well have made the game less fun, but I can attest that it only lends stability and balance to the game's economy.

To aid RPing, there is a split between Alliance and Horde. This is not like the artificial plits you see in many games to try and make factions. This truly is war. You cannot talk to the other side because you don't know their langugae. You can't group with them. you can't trade with them. It is a war and you are a part of it. This naturally leads to PvP. They have not implemented PvP to a great extent yet, but the next patch in a few days will have it all added in. Basically, PvP takes the form of the war between Alliance and Horde. There are some areas of the game that are "battlegrounds," where Alliance parties go to battle the Horde (and vice versa). By kiling NPCs and PCs of YOUR LEVEL OR HIGHER, you gain honor and go up in rank and titles. You also get discounts from merchants and the like as your factions go up. However, should you decide to be a "griefer" and kill NPCs and PCs that are lower level than you (just cuz you can, and its fun to watch em squirm), you will LOSE honor. Soon you will be killed on sight in any city in the game. The whole system is designed to make a PvP system where skill and honor are rewarded and being an ass who kills wantonly causes destruction of your character.

That's all that comes to mind right now, but there is much more and (Since it IS still a beta) more is being added every day. I can't wait for the full release.

Damn. In the development discussions I had suggested this and was told flat out that it wasn't going to happen.
DaoC clone but not yet in its old age with all the timesinks from the expansions (SI, ToA ><) It is sounding better and better even with the stupid looking cartoonish world.

I do find that this happens sometimes...which sucks a big one. The thing that sucks for Powergamers, IMO, is that for such a long time *all* they did was hologrind. They would bitch and moan, but they would play for 8 hours a day grinding. Doesn't sound fun to me...

They're going to rebalance combat soon, which if done right, will be great. Buffs won't work as well, and neither will armor...while TKA and Rifleman won't kick the shit out of everyone and Carbineer won't suck ass.

To me, however, the entire ground game will be nothing once JTL comes out. I might touch land to pay for my house and do the occasional new content theme park or what not....but otherwise you'll find me in my X-wing

BTW, it's too bad that so many people think SWG sucks :( Oh well

That's the mantra that the devs have been chanting since January, and it's been pushed further and futher down the road all the way to untill after the expansion in November or so. I wish I could say I still had a lot of hope that they knew how to do the revamp, but seeing how they've prioritized it, I really don't.

And that still doesn't address the other half of the game which is the current version. In fact it sounds like they will more or less discard the planetside half in favor of patches and publishes focused almost exclusively on X-Wing vs TIE Fighter Online.

They're not fixing the game enough for me to want to check in more than one hour or two a month.
