Gamer Overreaction?

Anyone ever get threated by playing online games? You play, you win, and then you get the threat of Virus or hacking. I don't get it---at all. What's the point of this, and do they really do this?
It seems mind-boggling.
It also seems like a case of people who have way to much invested in their video games.

While playing online, I've run into people people who turn into real assholes when they lose alot, and make up excuses and fling accusations of cheating, but I don't recall any threats...
BTW, Shouldn't this be in G&C?

Some people are just real sore losers.

sorry if it was. I wasn't sure if this were strictly computers, or an off-topic social issue.

People hate losing. Fact of multiplayer gaming life.
Does anyone else remember the time when an accusation of cheating was considered a great unintenional compliment?

It is to some respect, still that way.

Sometimes when I'm on a big roll and the opposition is being particularly bitchy I claim to be cheating.

Happily, I have no problems in this area at all, due to my being utterly useless at any sort of game.

In the computer game Bridgecommander there is one loser clan leader MI Malecki. He threatens to hack computers, send viruses and even kill his opponent. According to him he is waging a "total war". The thing is he cant distinguish between reality and fantasy.
An actual MSN conversation with Malecki.

Well, I've had my "allies" in Warcraft 3 turn on me and wipe out my expansion settlements when my main base was destroyed because they blamed me for my failure to hold off vastly superior numbers and their failure to do jack shit about it. Does that count?

To be fair, I would've done that too. That would've just been my excuse.
None of this compares to Chris punching Tony when he kept using counter moves on DOA2, as well as a slew of angered profanity.

I'd say yes. I would hope I walk away from a game before I consider threatening other players, or pull something like this. However, if it's a console game, chances are I'll just kill my controller instead.

Some people really do take games too seriously. I've been accused of cheating in Counter Strike games before. I had an incredible game once. My whole team was just sucking bad. We had been loosing for a while and morale was down. Well I had an incredible match. My whole team dies without killing a single terrorist. I procede to clean house and waste the entire terrorist side. By the end my health was very low and I was glad it was over. The opposition side imediately accused me of cheating. I merely pointed out that I was playing conservatively and that the last two people I killed was due to their stupid playing.
Some times people just need to relax. Win or loose, a game is supposed to be fun.

It happens. I've been accused of hacking in TFC quite often, because I aim for the head for stylish headshot symbols, or speedhacking in NS because I'm so hard to hit as skulk.
Usually its more funny than anything when somebody starts accusing you of cheating, since most of the other players will join in in ridiculing the accuser. Then it gets really funny when they start claiming to be a 1337 haxxor, and you tell them to hack 127.0.0.1

I've been banned from a few counter-strike servers by admins who obviously were crap players. Most of them i got reinstated when I contacted the admins I really liked. Not to copy alsyska but I did that, except one guy thought he could knife me in the back. Too bad that i heard him knifing air turned around and sprayed him in the face. I was vote kicked out because the people thought I couldn't have in a million years knew the guy was coming after me with a knife. Guess they don't have headphones and have the sound turned off.
In regards to viruses, yes I've heard of that. In Klingon Academy on Gamespy one person would enter every game and if he ever died, every other player would get a virus that would corrupt the game so they couldn't play anymore. What a putz. I had to wipe my harddrive after killing him to end all of crap I got from him.

I've already been accused of cheating in
Dawn of War, despite having only owned it for two days. The other guy couldn't understand how i'd managed to amass half a dozen dreadnoughts behind his base.
(For the curious, all it took was a cloaked scout squad and a few Orbital Drops.)

I've had a few l4m3rs accuse me of cheating a few times in Quake. That usually happens when my Force abilities start to make themselves heard when I play stoned.
There's a CTF map that looks like an open stadium with big tombstones (one of the best Railgun CTF maps ever made) and it doesn't take much besides a bit of bunnyhopping to build up a nice big huge speed advantage after you get the flag. Then I like to turn a full 180 in mid-hop and start blasting my attackers as I jam into reverse when I get back to the base. I've had nine guys gibbed with ten railgun shots doing that (I missed twice, got a 2 in 1).
This was on a public non-clan server fulla n00bs, and the "OMFG WTF H4X0RING F4GG0T!" and other shit started flying. I told 'em "Fag? Yup, I suck dick! Cheater? Nope, or PB (punkbuster) woulda kickbanned me. Try a bigger gun!" Well, it was 7-1 and I'd just scored the game point...
Now unfortunately my damn POS computer is far too slow for such shenanigans (it was HELLA LOT FASTER before!)

It should still be running Quake3 fine, I think you need to clean house in Windows... either that or build a 486DX2 shitbox for your roommates to trash with spyware and the like.
As for me, I've had UT-original games like that, where I'll be going full tilt, someone's chasing after me and blasting away, and I'll turn around and nail them. Ah, the fun of instagib CTF.

People always got upset when I beat them in something, it is just plain absurd.

I keep this comp clean and my roomies are smart enough not to even think about using the Blue E of Death for netsurfing. Guests aren't allowed to touch it at all.
I think Windows itself is rotting at a greatly accelerated rate towards an asymptote (Translation: It's going to Hell in a handbasket at an ever increasing rate and acceleration of the rate), and each reinstall lasts a shorter time before the rot rate goes asymptotic. I think Windows is physically damaging my hardware.
Symptoms: Random strangeness (weird error messages that make zero sense), GUI trouble (MASSIVE slowness, draw errors like wrong color around icons), and an overwhelming slowness, especially when moving files around the HDD in Windows Exploder. I have a 7200rpm 60GB Maxtor drive less than a year old, so there's no way in Hell the HDD is to blame.

What Windows are you running again?
It sounds like you need a complete, absolutely clean reinstall... as in hard drive format necessary, partitions preferable. I find that the going time for Windows 2000 (with all my programs installed) is about 1 year.

Yup, s'what I'm going to do. I already have my HDDs partitioned with exactly that in mind.
I would like to back up my Mozilla and Firefox settings and profile before I Drop the Big One...

Dreadnoughts? Bah, I say! Bah! Predator tanks are uber broken and own you!
