Computers for Dummies thread

Post by Straha »

Right... I have a confession to make...

Though I love my computer, do great things with it, and MacGyver it to work when it shouldn't, I only have an empirical knowledge of how it works, and why.

So could someone give me the low-down on how it all works and why (preferably along with explanations of all the little statistics that go with it)

Um, entire books have been written on the subject. Can you narrow it down to any more specific questions?

Ok its very simple. When you type stuff into your keyboard it sends light speed ants into the computer through the cable to get the math elves working hard to process your command. When they come up with an answer to the command they send the ants over to the monitor where art elves quickly draw what you see on the monitor.

As said above there is already a bunch of literature on the subject, and there are many many components that all must be working correctly on a computer. Also it depends exactly how much you want to know. For instance a processor works by sending electrical impulses through transistors etched in a sillicon chip, but that is barley scratching the surface of the actual mechanics that are going on.

Try www.howstuffworks.com or www.pctechguide.com for a some good introductions.
