Sometimes in online gaming clans go to war. But it seems pointless. Except for some MMRPGs a player will respawn again if killed. If the going gets too tough they can go to another server. The only thing a warring clan can do to other clan is to make their enemy clans time on the servers tough by numerical superiority. But that is nearly impossible to do since it requires vast presennce in every server.

Why would that matter? Playing such games period is utterly pointless except as recreation, if declaring war on another clan makes things more interesting or fun then why not?

Usually a "clan war" is structured to a degree. The two (or more) clans would agree to a set of rules, and usually the players participating have a good time while do so. What you're talking about is a group of people being a bunch of assholes.

Back in my AvP days, a clan war would go as follows;

Each clan's reps talk, and pick a side to be on in a fight. Eg; One clan might be all Predators, the other all Marines. We then create a game and fight it out.

Other times it just becomes targetting the clan whenever you see them in games.

It can be a good way to win bragging rights.
