Effing wireless

Post by The Cleric »

The wireless router in the house isn't playing nice. I'm picking up and using a nearby signal to post this, but it's irritating because I don't catch it strongly and it'll cut out.

Anyway, I don't know if I'm connecting to the in-house network. The IP addresses show 0.0.0.0., but it does say I'm connected. Just at 1 mbs instead of the 54 I should get (it does show perfect signal strength though). Any thoughts on what's fucking up here?

I feel your pain, and frankly, at the point I'm at, I'm ready and willing to drill the necessary holes to get my damned connection wired. Wireless is nice if you can manage it, it's great for when you're on the go, but it's utter shit to have to rely on regularly.

How many walls are between you and the router? Have you considered making yourself a parabolic antenna and aiming it in the general direction of your computer? There are diagrams all over the net. Theres even one available on the "Screen Savers" website, posted by Patrick Norton.

Or you could do what some people have done: take a 30 or 50 foot long cable, and use those things that you hammer into the walls to snake the cable up and down and around to where your router is.

Or use some really strong tape.

But yeah, I suppose that could be taking it a bit to the extremes.

Could you not get some sort of booster for the signal? I'm sure I've seen Bluetooth like Wi-Fi peripherals able to increase mobile phone signals and perhaps other types of wireless connection.

Also, when I'm on the in-home network, I gro from the full 54 mbs connection down to 1 mbs, and under the "Support" tab it says that I have an invalid IP address, and all the numbers are 0.

Oh and be sure to encrypte your line, wouldn't want any piggy backers ;)

Okay you got a IP adress on the third time. That’s good and not so good.

First of you should have gotten an address on boot but you did not, I expect that interference is the cause.

Do you have any cordless phone close to the router or the computer? If so try to move it.

Try to move the Router to the same elevation as the computer and keep as few walls as possible between them.

Also get the newest drivers for the card here Intel.com

And if you don’t use the Realtec card disable it. Star->Control Panel->Network Connection Rclick and choose disable on the Realtec card.

BUT don't forget to enable it when needed ;)

Is a manually assigned IP better than the DHCP assigned ones? Because it's cutting in and out a little.

I prefer manual for small/home networks

Then I allways know the IP for my other computers and it makes configuration of the router so much simpler.

What you need to know before changing

IP adress
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway

DNS Server
2nd DNS if your ISP uses one

All this info can be found in ipconfig /all

Nope

DHCP Lease is the time that you lend the ip adress from the DHCP server, your router in this case.

DHCP is a great tool to manage large volumes of computers connectied to a IP network, if you need to make a change just change the scope and when half the lease time has expired the clients will renew the lease and the changes will go out.

Do it like this.

Type ipconfig /all

Write down ip,subnet,gw and dns.

Type ipconfig /release

Click star->Control Panel->Network

Rclick on your wireless

Choose propeties

Choose tcp/ip and propities

Fill out your info :)

Image

Don't use my info, use the one you wrote down ;)
