Def Jam: Fight for New York

Post by salm »

probably the coolest fight game i´ve ever played.
you can play Ice "motherfucking" T "biatch" or Nyne and snoop dogg and a whole lot of other super cool gangstas and even create your own character by chosing from a whole bunch of different body and facial features.
i made one that resembles myself.
you can buy new baggy pants, bandanas or sneakers and wear your base cap backwards, sideways and upside down. you have to buy phat bling-bling to enhance your charisma and you can get different styles of tatoos ranging from yakuza to jesus heads.
your trainer is henry rollins.
the soundtrack should be obvious.

I can't remember any fighting game I've ever had more fun with. It gets my highest recommendation.

What I LOVE about this game is that you can't get taken out by a "bitch" hit, liek in so many others where ANY hit will take you out if you're low enough on wounds. In DJFFNY the finishing moves are fucking spectacular.

And just for the record - Flava Flav and Ice T vs Henry Rollins and Danny Trejo means that this game ROCKS.

Too much fucking fun.

It was fun...at first. Then when my friend took me into story mode. That's when I got pissed off. I whipped the shit out of someone, and he had no energy at all in his bar. Did he fucking lay down for the pin, or die from malnutrition? Hell naw, he got up and beat ME!!! I had half energy. WTF!!! My friend explains you have to do some sort of finisher move. Fuck that shit. If your into rigged shit like that, where you defy all logic and sense of gaming, then by all means, looks fun as hell and was when I fought my friend. However, that little bit sucked balls.

The fact you HAVE to finish someone off makes sense to me, at least for a fighting game in its "cartoony" style.

well being a wrestling game since when do wrestlers win without their signature move? Oh and btw it hits a high note when you throw the guy in front of the subway

Blah fucking Blah. I don't have to 'finish' someo one off. If that's thier style they want you to go through, then fine. There's some new 2D fighters out there.

That finish bit makes the game fun. It's come down to me and the opponent permanently in the red. Besides, slam the opponent off a wall or toss him into a crowd and lock up with him. Its curtains if they're in the red.

Someone wasn't paying attention to the tutorial I think as 'finishing' an opponent off is a helluva lot easier than he seems to think... especially since he mentions something about pinning when there is no such thing in DJ:FFNY.

List of things that KO opponents (note they have to have their bar in the danger area to work)

Blazin' Moves (signature moves)
Hitting them with a weapon
Crowd or wall grapples
Stage Hazards (throwing them out a window, throwing them in front of a subway, torching them in a fire, though the first 2 don't requre the bar to be in danger).
Style Knockouts*

By style knockouts I refer to the KO move every single fighting style posseses. Wrestlers can do it with a strong grapple, Kick-Boxers do a heavy grapple and their knee combo, Streetfighters can KO with their haymaker punch, and martial artists can vault off walls and such to kung-fu kick someone upside the head.

There's a ton of ways to KO an opponent that doesn't require you to use a Finishing Move, you just have to hit htem a bit harder than normal.

I appreciate you thinking WRONG! As I didn't go through a tutorial. Sporkzen rented it, called me over, and I just jumped in. In fact I beat him the first two matches I ever played on the game. I don't recall having to 'finish' him off in those. Then we decide it's time to unlock in story mode. Well, he whips the first two guys, so I'm like yeah, I'll take the third. That son of a bitch beat me when he had no health. I'm sorry, but my 'finishing' move was beating the shit out of that guy with a proper curb stomp this side of the bronx and he was still allowed to stand and beat me.

This game makes up what's been done over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again in 3D fighters with execution. Most 3D fighters are the same. Crappy characters with less then eventful moves that do jack shit. This one seemed to have pretty good balance. Even when Sporky there went on 'fire' I could still bitch slap his ass. Vice versa. The point that you have to use a 'finishing' move, which I didn't know any of the fucking moves to begin with is bullshit. In every other wrestling game, kicking the crap out of someone puts thier ass on the mat, and hitting a button will put on top to pin him. Fortunately it doesn't take long to find the ONE button to pin. Whereas in DJVFFNYDJANEHAJVJBUAGJEMABJE you have to figure out how to perform the finishing fucking move. The difference between a good game and a bad game is the ability for pick up and play. Sorry, this ALMOST had it, but then having to perform a 'finishing' move that you'll only learn IF you go through a damned tutorial, which doesn't occur when you go to hang out and throw down turns this into a BAD game.

Well then you hardly have the right to bitch about not knowing what to do now do you?
Sporkzen rented it, called me over, and I just jumped in. In fact I beat him the first two matches I ever played on the game.
Good for you.
I don't recall having to 'finish' him off in those.
Did you win via KO? In that case you performed one of the above mentioned KO moves or you took him out with an environmental hazard. it doesn't take much to perform a KO, you're problem is you never bothered to learn how to play properly and are blaming the game for your own shortcoming.

So you never bothered to run through the tutorial to learn how to play the game and lost, yet somehow it's the game's fault? Nevermind if you were there for the start of story mode it gives you the basic breakdown on things like KO right near the start.

That would be because it's a wrestling game in disguise not a traditional 3D fighter like Soul Calibur or Tekken.

The point that you have to use a 'finishing' move, which I didn't know any of the fucking moves to begin with is bullshit.
It's hardly the game's fault that you never bothered to learn this stuff since it gives it to you before your first storymode fight.

Furthermore your position doesn't really hold weight due to the fact that there's such a wide variety of 'finishing moves' that you were apperantly able to do them twice on accident.

Fortunately it doesn't take long to find the ONE button to pin. Whereas in DJVFFNYDJANEHAJVJBUAGJEMABJE you have to figure out how to perform the finishing fucking move.
This is again you placing blame on the game for your own shortcomings since they tell you how to do the Blazin' moves right off the bat. Further, for all its wrestling game mechanics it isn't as much a wrestling game as the first Def Jam game. It went more towards actually being a streetfighting circuit like the first game said.. when was the last time you heard of someone winning a bar fight by pinfall?

And in DJ it's even easier to pull a win than it is to make a pin in most wrestling games since if you've bothered to learn how to KO an opponent you don't need to worry at all about kickouts or any such thing. You pop someone in the mouth with a haymaker while they're in the danger zone and that's it, lights out, match over. Or you do one of the attacks where they're being held by the crowd or have been thrown up against a wall or other piece of the terrain.
The difference between a good game and a bad game is the ability for pick up and play. Sorry, this ALMOST had it, but then having to perform a 'finishing' move that you'll only learn IF you go through a damned tutorial, which doesn't occur when you go to hang out and throw down turns this into a BAD game.

So a bad game is any game where you can't immediately hop in and whup the computer's ass without bothering to learn how to play... riiiiiiight.

Brixton is a particularly dodgy part of London. You can add Tottenham (where they hacked a polcieman to death with machetes during ariot in the 80s) and New Cross to that list.

No. I have every fucking right. It's the only game I've picked up where I could'nt fucking play it. Seeing how the game utilizes something that's not in any of the other games, which is super fucking complicated to do unless you go through the whole game.
Sporkzen rented it, called me over, and I just jumped in. In fact I beat him the first two matches I ever played on the game.

Good for you.
No, bad for me. I wasted thirty precious minutes on a piece of shit. Much like I'm wasting time using intelligent reasoning on an ignorant asshat.
I shouldn't have to LEARN anything!!! How fucking hard is it for you to fucking understand?!? I picked up the controller, and played a game that is nearly identical to every other 3D fighter/wresteling game out there. Basically, if I had rented this myself or even bought it and jumped in some shit like that, it would be back at the store. If I want complicated or a thinking man's game I can pull out an RTS or a chess board. In this case, it was a rock 'em sock 'em wrestling game.

Then we decide it's time to unlock in story mode. Well, he whips the first two guys, so I'm like yeah, I'll take the third. That son of a bitch beat me when he had no health. Holy fuck your an ignorant son of a bitch. Was there any part of my post that you read? I go over to a friends house and pick up a controller. I never did anything playing against my friend except the 'on fire' thing and that was in the middle of the match. When I won I was doing the same thing. Tapping the hell out of my punch button.
This game makes up what's been done over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again in 3D fighters with execution. Most 3D fighters are the same. Crappy characters with less then eventful moves that do jack shit.

In wrestling games, one button pins the guy, and more then likely you've found that in the course of the match, usually by the second time he's on the ground. Here you have some complicated ass move. I know, you have to have your 'stizyle' when you 'finish' someone.

The point that you have to use a 'finishing' move, which I didn't know any of the fucking moves to begin with is bullshit.
It's hardly the game's fault that you never bothered to learn this stuff since it gives it to you before your first storymode fight.

Never did anything special. Tap the punch button, and the fucker went down.

Actually, I've got your ass right there. I looked in the fucking manual. The fucking manual for crying out loud. Didn't say shit in there. All it told me is there's a punch button, a kick button, a hold button, and some damned run button. Nothing about the other shit.
And in DJ it's even easier to pull a win than it is to make a pin in most wrestling games since if you've bothered to learn how to KO an opponent you don't need to worry at all about kickouts or any such thing. Once again, my 'finishing' move was kicking his ass.

When it's a fucking fighting game. Using a cop out 'finishing' move that it doesn't bother to tell you in the fucking manual. Maybe there's some out of the way game tutorial buried in the midst of shit. However, I didn't get that opportunity. Most games are curtyous enough to tell you to hit a certain button at critical moments like that. Except for this piss poor excuse for a time waster.

Damn this game rocks!
I got yesterday and was on it solid from just after lunch till about eight oclock! (at the expense of not starting some work for next week, doh!)

As for the gripes about knocking people out, the first time i played a one off fight it told me what to do and when i started off the story mode it gave me a tutorial. Even if you didn't get these, if your playing with a friend who knows the game the controls are simple enough to just tell someone how to do something ("Special move? Power up, get a grapple and tap R3"). The only excuse is if you've never played it before and your friend is a little bitch who doesn't tell you you need to do something to win.
