AIM trouble... need help

Okay, here it is, beginning to end...

My AIM takes awhile to start up. This is no big deal.

When it starts up, though, the whole news window takes ahwile to load. Ditto for the buddy list. And, sometimes the buddy list itself doesn't show up-- I get an error message telling me that it's dead ("your buddy list is temporarily unavailable. we regret the inconvenience." or some shit like that...).

I have HORRIBLE lag on AIM. when i IM someone, it takes awhile for the first post to get through... if i click twice on "send", it sends the damn greeting twice.

i can't get on the SDnet chat, either. Nor can I get on any other chats.

i'll be short and sweet...

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

please?

I'd seriously suggest getting something like Trillian. A lot less problematic.

Thanks a lot... [/sarcastic]

Then get rid of AIM, uninstall it. Anyways you get ad-aware from using AIM.

It sounds like either you're loaded up with spyware and viruses, or there's a serious communications problem between you and the AIM server. Are you on a college campus or behind any sort of router or firewall?

Nevertheless, you have a point.

Check on the campus-- they cut bandwidth back at the start of school because some virus got into the system from the dorms, so they chopped the dorm bandwidth. I can still get into the chat with AIM Express, though, so I don't think that's the problem.

I should be cool on the spyware/viruses-- my Norton has been behaving, and i'm using Mozilla, which's been fortituous thus far. I guess i'll dl HijackThis and CWS, though... i've also got SpySweeper.

Hmm-- Spanky, you mentioned AIM trouble? you downloaded some file, right...

AIM wouldn't load for me, and I got an error message specifying which file was missing. I fixed it by downloading a copy of msvcr71.dll and dropping it back in the windows->system folder.

Our problems don't seem to be related whatsoever.

You're right there.

Update: I've uninstalled AIM, but still can't do chatrooms. Haven't tried individual chats yet, but will let y'all know when i do. somehow i'm not expecting much...

AIM Express and AIM proper use different ports, as I recall...

Just a shot in the dark, but download Miranda IM and see if that works for you. If you do, read this thread.

If you still have trouble, talk to the network admin about making sure port 5190 and 9898 are open. (I'm not sure about Trillian, but in Miranda IM you can set it to whatever port you have open, so ask what ports are open as well.)

Heh, you're asking him to get a college network sysadmin to open ports for him? He'd have better luck trying to fellate himself :D

heh, I've had reasonably good luck accomplishing this goal....though it helps that I got to know the guy first. ;) It never hurts to be friendly with the sysadmin. :)

btw, any updates?

Not so far. Trillian is being uniformly shitty. I'm now relying on AIM Express almost solely. I will go and try Miranda, though... thanks for that suggestion.

(Incidentally, Dalton's right about the sysadmin...)

Update: Well, goddamn. Miranda is decent on the single IM's, but its chat lags badly and uniformly sucks donkey balls. Plus I can't change the goddamn font!

I guess GAIM's next...

Try actually looking at options. ;)

M -> Options -> AIM Group Chat

(btw, theres an updated AIM plugin on the site)
