Ack. I was trying to install ati's linux driver and broke XFree86.
I used alien to convert it from a RPM to a .Deb and then I "dpkg -i"ed it. That all went fine. However, ever since I tried configuring it x free 86 has refused to run. Last time I had x problems someone suggested an alternate window manager, can anyone tell me where I can find it? I'm sick of this crap.

It's breaking my system from beyond the grave.
Even after uninstalling it and selecting new drivers X86 still wont load.

Error messages would help. Try purging the XServer packages and the drivers (dpkg -P packagename) I think, which remove a package's config files as well.

Try this:

I got it fixed. Apparently something just didn't like the 2.6 kernel. As soon as I booted into 2.4 the X-server started working perfectly...
:D
