Not sure if this Belongs here (Omni-Regional DVD Players)

Are they worth buying?? Or are most just too crappy. I guess this can apply to Computers as well. Plus do they have any useful Omni-Regional DVD recorders??

Dunno, but the DVD player I bought in europe that can play all regions works perfectly over here in the US, and excepting the cheap remote (you have to be within a few feet for it to work), the players' quality is top notch.

That only depends if you watch alot of content outside of your own region. If you don't, then don't bother.

I would assume that for multi-region or regionless DVD players, like most things, you get what you pay for.

I've got a reasonable one, as I import quite a few discs.

£60 for a player with all the connections I'm likely to use (optical, S-Video, SCART), multu-region out of the box. Doesn't have HDTV support, but by the time I can afford a HDTV DVDs will be old news anyway

Multi region players aren't specially made- they're mostly regular DVD players that have been modified.

Specifically, the only change is that they have a hacked firmware that lacks the region code lockouts.

Does that get you into any sticky legal situations? Because I think the University has several multi-region DVD players (at least one that I definately know of in BCSB 101).

Although if I recall, all modding does is just void the warranty.

Most use a code inbuilt by the manufacturer to make them region free, so I very much doubt it. My player for example required me to open the tray then input a 4 digit code - region free player instantly. Why built something like that in if you don't expect some customers to use it? One person once suggested that this was for the factory to set each player to a region, but I find it odd that they would use such a cumbersome method for each player.

As far as I'm aware and from what I've read on the matter there is nothing illegal about region free players.

Apparently, some DVDs are going to be made so that they don't play on omni-regional players. Like the Region 1 Release of Leon: The Professional Special Edition.

I'd love to see what the Australian consumer reaction will be to that then, considering that the DVD Players are required to be omni-regional there.

They can simply master a different release for Australia then.
