Do they work? Has anybody tried one?

I've tried one. I think there was a slight difference, but nothing extremely noticeable.
The real problem was the Adware and Spyware. Never let your relatives use the computer in an Admin user mode.

I'm sure Norton SystemWorks 2003 does this with the "One Button Fix" option. I have it and it does mention a registry scan among other ones which are then analysed and fixed. Can't say I notice anything aside from virus removal and cleaning up broken shortcuts etc.

They work, atleast for me, cleaned up some problems.
I personally use the Tuneup2004 tools, it also lets me do a drive cleanup, but thats me, others like other programs better.

I used them in the past when I was less experienced. Computer started faster and also if you had messages on startup that said "file XXX is missing press any key..." they were removed.
They were for win98 mind ya...
Still using win98 but don't need them anymore.

Its free, check download.com, though its trial based.
However, just kill its registry enteries each time it reachs 30 days, and reinstall.
